Why wouldn't this crazy woman allowed me to speak to my cousin over the phone at his work?

This past week has been crazy. Had a family emergency my cousin is in the hospital and I was trying to get ahold of one of my relatives in Texas as I no longer had their personal phone number it's been 11 years and apparently they changed they're number. So I called the employer that my cousin works and when I asked to speak to my cousin mind you his brother was in critical condition in the hospital and the stupid receptionist wouldn't allowed me to speak with my cousin. According to her it was for safety purposes and that she couldn't give out basic information, Even dough I told her who I was and how I was related to my cousin and how serious his brother was but this nut job didn't let speak to my cousin. Why?

Workplaces have policies in place, and they have them for very good reasons. How could the receptionist be certain you were telling the truth, especially when she had never met you? For all she knows, you could have been a stalker or a murderer. The simple solution would have been for you to leave a message with the receptionist asking her to let your cousin know there had been a family emergency and to ask your cousin to call you asap.

I think you might need some professional help with how easily you lash out and start to call people names, when people don't do what you want them to do

Well, she didn’t know who you were and they’re usually not allowed to deviate from policy and make their own decisions. Furthermore, you’d expect a family member to have another family members phone number, so when they get a call like that, they may be thinking it’s a scam.

Its because they couldn’t verify who you were. Its actually pretty common nowadays for people to impersonate others on the phone. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
