Do you feel embarrassed when you receive gifts for your birthday?

I do, especially when they come from people I barely know and the gift are particularly valuable. My father was good at receiving gifts, he acted all excited and happy like a spoiled child, but I'm like "you really shouldn't have" and I consider what kind of favors this person will be expecting from now on.

Not really, except for a specific type of Playboy themed gift. It was a given every year my buddies would chip in and buy me an annual subscription to Playboy; at least until the magazine ended. It kinda sucked b/c I'd always have some random Playboy floating around when somebody would see it in the worst possible time.

Other gifts I've received were Playboy shirts (x3), a ball cap and some shorts. All had an oversized giant Playboy bunny logo on it. One was a joke gift, but the others were genuine.

I would ask them "Why would I wear clothing with that logo when I have got them tattooed?"

They responded "Um... I thought you liked wearing the logo?"

It was embarrassing to explain to them the difference between a Playboy logo worn on my arms that I can't take off no matter how I feel about it, and clothing. I didn't need any more Playboy themed clothing when my body is already permanently Playboy themed.

I took those "gifts" to the Goodwill next chance I got.

Yes. My birthday aligns with a major holiday. So i learned from a very young age to expect my birthday to be completely forgotten, year in and year out. It became so normal that IF someone remembers my birthday now, it’s my only reminder that it’s my birthday! Ell oh ell!

I can't either which is more noticeable since most girls will jump and hug the person gifting them.

After I say "thank you, I really appreciate it" with a gracious smile, at least I think it is. I always get asked "did you really like the gift", "should I go change it" etc and I really don't like that.

I’ll admit- I’m only embarrassed if it’s from someone I KNOW doesn’t like me or doesn’t want to gift me, but does so to be polite- family member or not lol

Its more so of being in an awkward situation, than embarrassing. I could return it and give them the money back

It makes me extremely uncomfortable and I feel embarrassed to be honest. I don't know why this embarrassment is deeply rooted within me, but it cannot possibly be normal.

Yes! I have been that way since I was a little girl. However, my mom always let me pick out my Christmas gifts and I could hardly wait till Christmas!

But gifts from friends, relatives, co-workers or other people, I opened them with trepidation because I know I will probably have to act all surprised and happy and that is why I get embarrassed. 😏

Why should you feel embarrassed if people are thoughtful enough to think you’re special? Be thankful instead. Regardless the price tag, just say thanks and wow you didn’t have to! And give them a nice warm hug 🤗 .
Now if it comes with a price after… that’s a different story.

Not really; however, it IS difficult for me to fake appreciation for items that are wrong size or otherwise poorly or thoughtlessly selected.
