What to do about grumpy neighbour?

So we have an old couple that live next door to us, and the husband has started what is going to be a bit of an issue between us.

In my household, we have a tv with a pretty good sound system. We got the tv and the good sound system so we can enjoy it and have good quality sound, as I’m sure a lot of people like to have.

We don’t have the tv THAT loud though, and it almost always off by 12:00-12:30 at night. The sound goes up to 100 and we have it on like 45 when we’re playing music earlier on in the evening/day, and we turn it down to around 30 at night. AND we don’t even play music on it every day, probably like 4 times a week.

Our neighbour has called us up on the phone a few times recently though, complaining about the ‘boom boom’ sound bothering him and he says he can hear it in his house. And he texted us ‘thank you’ one night when we turned the tv completely off.
I feel like this is not fair, as we don’t even have it that loud. It’s our home, we should be able to watch tv and enjoy some good sound, like everyone else does! Our other neighbours literally have a stereo system outside he doesn’t complain about them, because they aren’t right next to him! If our tv is bothering him that much, like put in some earplugs!


Any advice/ Any way we can resolve this?

You do not have to have the music loud. Going by level is a misnomer. If you are in one of these big box apartment complexes the walls are super thin. I have a BOSE and live in a house. My Neighbors can hear it outside at 25. It probably is loud. Unless you have a night shift employed Neighbor then go loud from 9-3pm.

12 midnight pounding BOSE at any decimal is unacceptable. This escalates to Landlord, he/she is going to get rid of one of you... no time for the crap. Younger usually cause more problems whether they mean to or not. 25 and under have to live a perfect tenancy and i will not rent to your age group unless in university and parents have signed on.

What? The music isn’t loud that’s my whole point. Half the time we’re just watching tv and he complains. And people in life SOMETIMES are allowed to enjoy some music playing out loud. It’s one of the best joys in life!! I agree, to have neighbours who constantly have music blasting like it’s a party would be SUPER annoying, but we’re not doing anything like that

You might try reducing the bass level on your audio equipment.

That could make a huge difference.

That is strange I mean how close is this guy and are all your windows open? and old people don’t have good hearing anyway so that’s kind of unusual too lol

Their house is pretty close to ours, and his bedroom is literally right near our lounge room which is not ideal :/ but no our windows aren’t open

No wonder he hears it , I guess you’ll need to turn down the bass after 10:00 o’clock

No, just an average house. Our houses are about 6 metres apart though

That's not far a part. I can see why vibrations could travel to his house. Have you gone outside when the music is loud?

I mean we always have gotten along, but we can’t not watch tv in our own home
