Is it rude to set up automatic replies for family and friends' emails, letting them know that I'm away?

So when family and friends send me an email, they get an automatic email letting them know that I'm away until a certain day and time. Is that polite or arrogant to sound that busy?

I think it is fine if it is real for example if you are traveling, but if you just only want to answer emails once a week or whatever they will see through it v. soon and not be happy about it. JMO!

by the way who emails their family? The only emails I get from family would be a flight itinerary if somebody was flying somewhere or things like that, I do not get emails from family in a typical month.

I think it's nice and thoughtful: that way I know why I'm not getting a reply. The key is to make it simple. Something like: "I'm on vacation for two weeks. Please forgive my delayed response."

sounds like a good idea... because they get to know for sure rather than wonder and not knowing at all

We use the "out-of-office" feature in Outlook at work. It's very useful, and a polite way of letting the sender know you're away.

Personally, I would disregard you email unless you are going to be out of touch for a long period of time, say a week or longer.
