Why are men expected to work and not women?

I've been confused about this my whole life.

If you're asking why physically laborious jobs are usually male oriented, and service sector jobs are usually female oriented, there could be several different factors.

Men are usually physically stronger (on average) than women. So labor jobs that require a lot of physically demanding tasks are more male occupied.

Women, on average, enjoy much more interaction and communication which is found more in teachers, nursing, and the like.

I would say that any disparity between the two sexes within a job sector are purely preferential, as no one I the public sector 'has' to work in that particular field. Unless the employment is bound by contract, a person is free to seek any job they wish, but working within one's capabilities leads to the disparity we have today.

To be more nuanced, traditionally men worked while the women stayed home. Times have changed, and socio-economic factors mean its usually easier for both partners to work outside the home, with the men usually (but lowering by the year) bringing home more income than women. However, women are seeking higher and higher paying jobs so those figures are reaching an even balance.

I myself work and my wife does stay home. Our traditional lifestyle works for the both of us, we play to our strengths and we've forged a happy home out of it. I wouldn't say it's for everyone but we enjoy it and have no desire to change.

Do you feel resentful sometimes that you are going outside waking up going to work etc while your wife gets to stay home?

Not really. Lots of entitled women out there.

In the US, especially with the rising cost of living, I think it's safe to say that women are expected to work also.

But even so it’s still seen as acceptable if a woman works and the men work more.

It is human nature that men are providers and protectors, and women are nurturers. Despite the efforts by many to socially engineer men and women to dismiss their true nature, it's coded in our genes as human beings to be this way.

But why? In terms of, that is why some people think women are less

Are you asking why men are women are genetically predisposed to different priorities, desires, needs, strengths, weaknesses and behaviors? If so, the answer is millions of years of natural selection and evolution.

Today's men and women still have the genes that were passed down from the ancestors whose priorities, desires, needs, strengths, weaknesses and behaviors allowed them to live long enough to breed and raise children to breeding age so they could do the same. Those priorities, desires, needs, strengths, weaknesses and behaviors were different for men than women.

For example, a woman was much more likely to successfully pass on her genes if she had a strong, smart and capable man to protect and provide for her and her offspring. And a man was much more likely to pass on his genes if he bred with a woman who was loyal to him and capable of nurturing and caring for his offspring.

We still have those genes today even though they may not be as necessary to our survival in the modern world, but they still shape who we are and what we are attracted to in the opposite sex. That's why men are still attracted to kind, sweet, nurturing, loyal women, and women are still attracted to confident and capable men who have a strong instinct to protect and provide for their loved ones.

The value women bring in that equation is at least as important in this world as the ones men bring. But unfortunately today's women try to judge their own value based on what they value in men, but men don't value the same things in women. That has caused all sorts of problems in dating, relationships and society today.

Adults have responsibilities so men and women are expected to work

In a lot of families the women don’t work that much like for example a woman working a normal job married to a guy with a good one.

Why?

Many years ago there was a standard that the man provided financially for the house and the woman stayed home and raised the children. Some married people chose to follow that tradition while others have both parents working. Because you asked about families there should be at least one parent at home responsible for the children and while some dads do that now it’s decided between the married couple.

It does but I’m still confused because raising children is a lot more fun than working a job 5 days a week.

Is it fair that women don’t have to do that?

@BarryLiverstone staying home to raise the kids is no fun at all especially when they are little and very needy. I spend most of my days ignoring my own needs and tending to my kids since it is a 24/7 job. It would definitely be more fun to go to work and be able to catch a break
