Have you ever had to deal with a drunk parent?

When I lived with my mother as kid and teenager, some evenings she would come home drunk, or had stayed home and drank during the day.

That said, she wasn't abusive or violent, she'd get extremely sentimental and docile in letting me help her to bed or washing her, and I admit that sometimes I would manipulate her into signing bad school marks or getting money or cigarettes from her.

She regrets this now and although she still drinks occasionally she never gets drunk - hell, when sometimes when I drink she takes away the liquor saying I had "already seen the bad example" and to not overdo it.

One thing my mother said is that in her experience an alcoholic thinks they are hiding their addiction very well, but everyone can see it clear as a day.

My mom is an all-out drunk. She'd get drunk and drag some dude home to hump so loud that my sister would be screaming for them to STFU. I only dealt with it from 13 to 16, but it was enough for me to realize she was nothing but a shit bag slut.

She was abusive... she would turn it into a game though like she's just having fun. Shit like grab me by my hair and yank on it until I yell out "awoooga" to make her laugh or tickle me until sores broke out on my face and the other people there were begging her to leave me alone. Other fun stuff like her losing her beer or cigarettes and then accusing us of stealing, flipping over all the furniture and tearing our rooms apart (she left it in the car), and if you tell her where her keys, cigarettes, beer is... that's when you get accused of planting it there.

I just had a heart to heart with my sister about our Mom... my Mom is such a stupid bitch. She's mentally fucked our minds. She's the kind of mom that likes to hold loaded guns against your head and constantly play mind games. If I ever see an adult acting that way I'm going to break their fucking face in.

Fuck, I dont blame ya. If I can trybtobrelate, my father set our house in fure and tried to stab us, when Ibwas still in a crib. Stepfather, that got... That git bad, I was violated, my brother, my motyer, the same. Young and stuoid, when I set out on my own, I looked my dad. We had Christmas dinner around 2010, He eas cutting a frozen turkey on a bandsaw in a shitty safehouse full of addicts and criminals, "roomates". I looked from a kitchen knife stuck in a cutting board to keet his eyes.

"You want to kill me, don't you?, he asked, never looking away. All I said was," I coukd and no one here would care. I could kill you and get on a plane home. But you are already dead".

I am glad I didn't put myself in a position to face time and perpetuate and cycle. I think he died during the pandemic, I just dont know, and I just dont care. I tell my younger brotuer all the time, try to he the better man. It has kept us away from that life. Your future is yours man. Nit some worhless fucking ovaries or a sperm dination. Its yours. Dont be in a rush to surrender it.

@Heterosketero I relate. It's easy for me to assume it wasn't all that bad and it was just like everybody else's childhood. It's only when I really start talking about it that I realize just how fucked up it all was.

I've raised my own kids at this point and just thinking about treating one of my own kids the way my Mom treated me or my sisters... it makes me sick to think about. She's not right in the head, and we've had to suffer because of her.

Yup, defensive guilt, I know it well. What helped me was going out in tye boojs and havung a screaming math with her to get that shit off my chest. Smash a dead car, ugly somerhing up.

My dad once said to me when we did spend time together, that his only value niw waa to shiw me what not to be. I respected that. He was a homeless heroine addict awol from the sytem at 13. Your mom, indefensibke as it is, probablty descends from a line of briken peoole. Good for you for breaking the cycle

I would say intergenerational trauma is one of the worlds greatest challenges and part of why we are where we are right now. Many of us try to hide it and function, but we are always close to the wire. I'm glad you chatted me up :)

My parents were very much against being loose around their kids. They didn't like to watch certain movies, I never got the talk about the birds and the bees. He always treated me like we were in a corperate office or something.

By the time I got old enough to drink he was in his second marriage and this woman really opened him up more. We went to a concert just me and my dad and I don't know what happened but he had two glasses of whisky and he was sick as hell.

The irony of the whole situation was I was totally fine and he used to always say I was irresponsible.

He was throwing up out the window on the ramp to get onto the highway and we were laughing so hard about it.

Next time I saw him drunk was on his 50th birthday where when we got home he started demonstrating his judo skills which at that point mostly consisted of him laying on the couch and being a goofball. 5 years later I think he's decided he's just gonna go back to sipping.

I get why for other people maybe these stories would seem really bad but I was just greatful I got to see a side of him he probably repressed when my brother and I were born.

Made me remember that your parents are just regular people who had to grow up and form opinions about stuff. Their as lost in life as anyone else and it's unfair to blame them for it. Especially when they're only doing what they think is best for their family.

Thankfully never had to. My dad was alcoholic (not abusive but the joking and dizzy type) according to my family but he quit it when I was in kindergarten and the only time I recall curiously holding a glass of unfinished alcohol and smelling it and he snatched the glass away from me. He told me it's bad for me and yelled at me to not approach it again, I was frightened and nodded (I had no intention to drink it since I knew my mom hated it for some reason).
I said yes and that I understand but why do you drink it then? My dad was silent, my memory ends there.

Thousands of times. My mother was an alcoholic all my life. Doesn't matter how sick she got, she never stopped, no one could make her stop. (She had high blood-pressure, went off her pills, had two strokes, and had to spend the last year of her life in a hospital.)

Honestly, no.
I consider myself very lucky when it comes to having the parents I have.
It is probably the only area in my life that I have been blessed and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
I am really sorry you had to go through that, it must have been extremely hard.

Both my parents were alcoholics. My mother married another alcoholic - who would at times become abusive, I followed their ways.

Not only did I deal with my parents drunk, but I'd also take care of my (step) dads shipmates - often while drunk myself.

Like my mom loves beer and when family comes over all of them drink together hard liquor. I was always allowed to have a sip, so alcohol was never something bad to me and I learned early on to not miss use alc and drink not too much etc

Muly mom smoked a lot of pot and kept to heself. 20 years after her death, my brother and I have both become her, in the reclusivity at least. Stole my fair share and smokes and such. Yeah. He would drink til he passed out, later on would vomit at the toilet with the worst sound. I'd help clean up and make sure his cds weren't damaged. Eventually, he stopped drinking to raise me.

No, I have seen my father drunk once, and immediately upon comng home, he went to bed. I have never seen my mother have more than one drink. I occasionally have a drink at home but my girlfriend has never seen me have more than two drinks.
