I'd be kinda surprised because even though I'm older than 18 she never asked me to pay rent while I was still 18 but if she did start asking me for rent money i'd try my best to come up with the amount

when I lived at home my parents asked me to pay rent... what I didn't realize was they took the rent money and saved it for me. They gave me all the money back when I moved out.

If I was working and living in my parents house I probably would already be paying without them asking. Chances are they are probably lowballing the rent compared to any apartment and not even charging utilities.
Two of my friends a few years ago had to move back home after losing jobs. One was very ungrateful and refused to pay rent or help out much around the home while the other paid rent as soon as she got a job. We 3 were discussing it and my first friend was all entitled saying her parents should take her no matter what snd that she's not a maid while my second friend tore into her about the reality of the situation and how lucky she was because though she personally preferred her own place she knew that anywhere else she would be charged a hell of a lot more and is more than happy to help out cook, clean, babysit whenever she can out of gratitude to her parents for always being there for her when she needs help.
My kids had one year of free rent after they graduated from college and then they were expected to pay rent. They all moved out after the year was up.
I paid my mother rent even after I moved out, even after I got married and then we had my son and my wife stayed home and we only had one income so I finally had to cut her off. She was pissed.I live with my mom and she doesn't ask me to pay rent. As long as I help contribute like buy the occasional groceries every now and then and help out with chores then it's all good
When I was living home I had to pay rent 6 months after I got my first job. I still had to help around the house like mow the lawn, rake leaves, shovel snow. I was 15 when I got my first job.
I started charging my kids rent a year after they got their first job. They also have to help around the houseI live with my parents and pay for almost everything. (They are retired, and pension here is so small. I rather live here than pay 2x set of bills)
Does that count as paying rent?
Pay the rent. :1 I know, that sounds bland but if you don't own that house, i suggest you find a new place or pay up.
Pay rent, or move out. I mean they don't even have to give you that option. My mother is widowed and on a fixed income so I'd want to pay her rent. I don't think there's one simple answer to this as everyone's situation is different.

I would pay rent, and if I was unhappy, I would save money until I could afford to secure my own housing.
It's gotta be a joke or something that I'm not getting, lol. Because your options would be to pay rent or pay rent somewhere else, right? What am I missing?
I would pay the rent they ask or else I would move out which is what you should have at age 18 or upon graduating or quitting college if in fact you did attend college.
If I was living with my parents as an adult and had a decent job, they wouldn't have to ask me to pay rent. I'd already be doing that... voluntarily.
Part of being an adult is paying your own way.
a dude can be 35 and if the parents asked you to pay rent they would contact Child Protective Services with a complaint of child abuse 😁😝🤣😂
If I ever had to move back in with a parent - they'd not have to ask. I'd automatically pitch in.
It never happened to me, I relocated to my newly found job immediately following my college graduation. If it were to happen, I would pay rent. You should pay your own way once you are an adult.
i'm assuming we are talking adult children? The way my parents did it was I was either in school full time or paying rent. It was time to grow up out of HC so no reason to give adults a free ride.
I wouldn't pay my parents to live under their rules, for me that means its time to move.
I think it’s reasonable if you’re an adult you should pitch in. The deal I got was I didn’t have to pay as long as I was in school, seemed fair to me
I’m a college grad job searching. I WANT to contribute.

if that were to be the case... that's the least I could do
