My parents asked me why I felt I had to give expensive gifts and I brought up things they said in previous arguments that convinced me that big gifts were important to them. Why did they get upset when they asked me? My dad said that I should just be able to tell when they’re having problems, without them saying anything and I said I can’t read minds. That they have to tell me when something’s up, otherwise I won’t know and might think if they’re being a bit mean, that they’re just being mean. I do have Asperger’s, so I may not get this.

It sounds like there might be a communication barrier between you and your parents. While you may have tried to understand their preferences based on past arguments, people's feelings and expectations can change. It's important to have open and honest conversations with them about your perspective and to express your willingness to learn and adapt. Mentioning your Asperger's could help them understand your perspective better, emphasizing the importance of clear communication in your relationship.
If you feel like you want to give big gifts, they should understand that and if you can afford it. What's the big deal? I don't think your aspergers is the issue. It's your parent's not knowing who you are or carrying about your perspective period.
