Are people who game seen as lazy/unambitious/slobs?

Question

I game everyday for 1-6hrs, depending on the day. If I mention it to someone, or a relative I feel so ashamed for absolutely no reason. I can see the look in their eyes though, they look at me like I am an alien or just a weird person for liking gaming.

I find it the most peaceful thing in the world. But people seem to look down on me for gaming, thinking I may have low social skills or a nerd, FYI this is exactly what my step sister thought of me before getting to know me.

I dont know if there is any real negative associations with gamers. I have a healthy life overall (e. g., career, education, physical health), but I feel like I have to hide it from everyone?

I dont know if I am the only one who feels this way or others out there who experience the same thing?

I see gaming like watching tv or movies. Same thing?

No reason to feel ashamed of it. But, like anything it is something you CAN do alone, such as watch a series or films, and it can become obsessive, time-wasting and a or anti-social. I know you can "talk" to other players while playing, but that's not like interacting in person. It's like a phone-call-in game.

I used to do Ocarina of Time that my son intro'd me to. But I only liked the shooter aspects of it. I've played Halo, but the "world" aspects, bloody killings, high violence and the fact that the game takes so long makes me lose interest.

I love shooter games, matching games, word games, racer/driving games. Loved Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Just trying to do the tricks. Stuff I can do for short bursts and put away.

I don't care about storylines, beating bosses, shooting, killing humans in games, or beating them up (Kickboxer, Call of Duty) or aliens/monsters. I love Galaga. Simple shit a moron can play. Shooting bugs, or ducks (Duck hunt). I am actually a duck hunter, so trying to get them in the game is fun. I wish there was a fishing game. Just started fishing.

But six hours a day is a lot. I have to cook do yard work, paint interior rooms, write for contests and work. I don't have that much extra time to spare.

That MIGHT be why people look askance at you. Gaming can be VERY time consuming and isolating. But sounds like you get out and about.

It's your choice. Only thing about these games, mine included, are they produce nothing. I suppose they're sort of brain numbing, like twiddling your fingers. Maybe they're like staring at clouds. They're brain rests. I'd watch my time, though.

Unfortunately it's always been a trope that if you game, you must be severely overweight with pimples coming out of your face.

Funny thing is, there are gaming YouTubers who are fit.

If you have to hide it from certain people, they're not your friends in the first place.

On top of that, people who don't game should realize you barely can do anything in a game for an hour or two. I mainly game at night for like five to six hours, since I usually do stuff in the daytime. I do open world games mainly, and there's a lot of exploring to do.

Can't do that in an hour.

I was going to say "No, it's not the same thing; it's considerably more active, if only mentally"- but that's not always the case, is it?

Something like Dwarf Fortress requires planning, knowledge, and quick reactions to play well (and the patience to work out the UI; the game's fantastic, but my goodness, could it use an overhaul in that area!); compare that to Candy Crush, and it's not hard to see how people who don't know how deep and complex it can get would assume it's all mindless.

some people can be some or all of that and play a lot of video games...

and others can be none of that and still play a lot of video games...

and some can be all of that too, and not play any video games, so...

personally I would not give a damn... if all of other aspects in life are sorted and going well, then I would just enjoy the rest of my free time any way I want... as long as not a detriment to me or others

It used to be worse. In the 1980s to 90s gaming was seen as a weird subculture for nerds, antisocial people and slobs - at least by the intellectuals. Ever since gaming has become quite the public multi-billion Dollar sector, it's more acceptable. But of course some people are addicted to gaming and need help.

I think it's in you. If you like it, it's OK. You have to just work on your own emotions and remove the shame from them. You do nothing wrong.

Many years ago, in my 30s I played in semi-hc guild in WoW. My play time weekly was over 50 hours and I was working full time.

It was a fulfilling experience and I enjoyed this. Nowadays comes the realization that I was trying to secure some needs this way. But still I enjoyed it that time.

I don't think gaming is bad its just a form of pass time and also enjoyable. I like to game sometimes but I don't game that many hours a day. If you're doing it for 6 hours a day that seems like too much unless you're like a professional gamer who's job is gaming.

What else are you doing with your life? I know plenty of men with well-paying tech jobs who are also gamers. I'm a bit of an outlier because it doesn't appeal to me.

I think it depends on the person. I'm a "reformed gamer". I still enjoy gaming but my focus is on other things right now.

Hard-core gamers are hyperfocused goal oriented people. When you think about it they have great potential. It all depends how it's channeled.

I'm an investor. I attack investing the same way I game. And the achievements in this game are real.

Nothing wrong with passionate gaming so long as you know how to blend it with real life.

Not all. Gaming is quite an expensive hobby. One needs to be putting at least some effort into life to afford it. unless you just work as a prostitute with an only fans account or something.

There is a stigma for sure, but my wife and I do the same and we have a great life. We've had so many adventures together with each other and friends with games or sitting on the couch watching one another and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I wouldn't say lazy but it does tend to make the assumption that they prob don't take care of themselves too well. Like eating fast food and never exercising. It does have a tendency to zombify your brain too.

They do take a lot of time to get good at. That being said gaming is now a trillion dollar industry world wide.  So I would say yes, but I believe this is slowly changing year by year.
