Girl, I feel you. Letting go of family is one of the hardest things ever, but it sounds like you're making the best decision for your happiness and health. Here are some things that may help as you go through this process:
- Surround yourself with real friends who love and support you unconditionally. Lean on them when you're feeling down.
- Give yourself time and space to grieve the family you wish you had. It's ok to be sad about the loss.
- Focus on building the family you choose – with your partner, friends, future kids if you want them. These are the people who will be there for you.
- Stay busy with hobbies you enjoy so you're not dwelling on everything that was said and done.
- Seek support from a therapist if needed. It helps to have an objective third party to talk through feelings with.
- Be proud of yourself for having the courage and strength to do what's best for your well-being. Not everyone can do that.
- With time, the pain will lessen. The first holidays apart will be hardest. But it does get easier, I promise.
Lean on your girlfriends, and feel free to message me anytime too if you need a listening ear or distraction. You've got this - you're so much stronger than you realize!
If family members are abusive, Islam permits prioritizing one's safety and well-being above maintaining ties with them. Islam condemns all forms of abuse and injustice, including within familial relationships. In such cases, it is not only permissible but also necessary to take steps to protect oneself from harm, which may include seeking support from authorities, seeking refuge in a safe environment, and cutting off contact with the abuser. Islam encourages seeking help from knowledgeable scholars, counselors, or community leaders who can provide guidance and support in navigating abusive situations and taking appropriate measures to ensure one's safety and well-being. Ultimately, protecting oneself from abuse is consistent with Islamic principles of justice, compassion, and self-preservation.
