Why people look down at single mothers?

Question

im 41 and divorced. after 18 years my husband decided to build his life with another woman. my daughter is autistic and her dad isn't really interested in raising her. i dont get any help from him. im working and raising her by myself. it wasn`t my choice to be single mum. i was thinking about building my life with someone else but after seeing how people see single mothers i have decided to focus on my daughter and myself.

no one should ever assume your story or why you got divorced. i guess most look down on single moms because of social media. like, for instance, teen moms (who are more likely to also be single moms). i guess it just bled over into adult single moms too. then you have the religious people (no comment). and then you have the people who love to judge others because they're not happy with their lives either.

but anyway, i hope you and your daughter are okay and are happy and healthy, with or without a male figure. most people can't stand to see independent women for some reason.

Because those people haven’t let go of false ideologies and negative stereotypes that have plagued women for ages now. Fortunately I feel like younger generations are breaking down those narratives and falsities but unfortunately some are still being tainted by the older folks who were raised to look down on single mothers. They immediately label those women as promiscuous or damaged goods, or just don’t want to deal with another man’s kid/kids.

Most guys are leary of dating a single mother for two reasons.

First, she has a demonstrated track record. Not all, but many single mothers got that way due to poor life choices, and that's a big red flag.

Second, for men, children are already a huge risk because we have virtually no rights in reproduction or paretning. For men, children represent responsibilities without concomitant rights. Choosing to put ourselves in that position when the children are not even our own is a very tough choice to justify.

Single parents have their work cut out for them. It’s a lot of work.

Some single moms seem to think the world owes them something, and they happen to have a pretty loud voice.

That has created an unfair stereotype.

Single moms made bad judgements so thats a negative. They did however keep the child which I respect. Divorced moms are a bit different. The child is expected at 41 and divorced. It’s the divorced thing that is a big negative. Divorced people have a much higher likelihood of divorcing again which is a high risk relationship.

It's not that people look down on them (after all, the reasons why a woman is a single mother can vary greatly), it's just that they are usually not in a situation where dating them is a good idea.

Every woman claims "abuse" in a failed relationship and often the "abuse" was simply telling her "no" once in awhile.

Single mothers are frowned upon because of the destruction they bring upon society.
