How do you deal with someone who always yells?

My mom always yells, is always angry about something. I'm always on eggshells whenever around her. I never like to ask questions, really simple questions too, (tho I do have to sometimes as there is no other way around it) and I have to prepare myself for her raising her tone or ending up yelling. I don't know how to deal with these interactions and also don't know how to cut her off.

I had someone angry at work over something. A colleague. I said to her, simply, why are you so aggressive? Why are you so aggressive to me? She piped down and sat down instantly.
