Is it too early to ask someone to meet over coffee via IG if you are looking for a friendship?

I moved into a new city and haven’t really connected with anyone. I noticed that a friend of my friend is also in Montreal but I have spoken like 2 words with her in total. I started the convo by replying to a food story and also told her that I’m in the same city. She replied and recommended the cafe hoping I have a great time. Is it too weird to ask her to meet over coffee?

There is no harm in that, but since she only recommended the place and also wished you a good time, it doesn’t really sound like she wants to go. It can be hard making friends as we get older, some people are reluctant to make new friends altogether. You should try what I did when I moved; download the neighborhood app, it will be specific to your location. Make a post there mentioning that you’re new in town and looking for some new people to show you around. I got a few responses to my ad, and although not every connection amounted to much, I made a great friend who I have been close with now for a little over 2 years. Worth a try!

Very few people will meet a new person at a coffee shop that they are not dating. If you want them to agree to a social outing, spend a month emailing and texting first, then when you invite them for coffee they will say yes.

If you plan to ask her to be your girlfriend, probably. Otherwise, as two fiends, I don't see a problem with it.

Well I haven’t exactly met her online. I had simply met her through a friend in uni but I agree that I know nothing of her since I haven’t talked to her other than saying hi. But I kind of dropped the idea having given it a thought, since her friend group do not share the same interests with me anyway
