“I understand this is something that is important to you but at this moment in time I am not able to actively engage with this in a way that would benefit both of us, please give me a little space so that I can get my head back on straight and we can reconvene on this subject then.”

You don’t. You can only control how you respond to the situation.

It depends if you want to preserve a functional relationship with them afterwards or not.

If you do, maybe something like “I think you have a lot of experience and insight about __ but sometimes that can be intimidating to others and you should develop some comfort with letting other people share thoughts and ideas with you. I think people want to connect with you better but it’s hard when they feel they can’t have a voice with you.”

If you don’t, try the straight up “Man, you just talk too much. I’m mentally taxed trying to keep up with you.”

I meet people like this all the time , it’s not the talking so much as the feeling of being talked at ! That I really dislike. I will always inject humour the first few times I mention it like , “ take a breath “ what I will say next depends on who they are to me but commonly I will say that I need to do something else

"You talk too much" or as OlderAndWiser has said "You sure love the sound of your own voice".

Then again, it has a high chance of prolonging their boring blabbling even further.

I found the shortest way to get over it is by simply not responding and not listening. Pretend that this talking machine is not there.

Avoiding causing such situations in the first place is therefore preferable.

Once i grew up, i stopped caring about “tact”. If they don’t respect you enough to ask if you think they’re talking too much, why should you care enough to break it to them gently that they can shut up?

Sure, something like... you know, sometimes silence is golden. Is that a polite enough way?

I Know That You Don’t Know but there are things call earplugs & instead of saying shut up just put in the earplugs instead & maybe they will get the hint.

I used to have a business partner who when he talked too much, his wife would give him a subtle look and he knew to tone it back.

    They had an awesome relationship

Ask them "do you hear that" then when they stop talking to identify the sound you get quiet. If they start talking repeat as necessary
