What do you think about swaddling a baby (wrapping them like a potato), do you agree with it or not?

When I was just 3 weeks old, my father's mother wrapped me but my parents disagreed right at the same time. They are against swaddling a baby. They don't like the idea of a baby not being able to move its arms and legs, of being uncomfortable. Neither of my twin sisters weren't swaddled.

The baby isn't me but that's how I was once swaddled and my parents told her to unwrap me immediately. I'm not into it either. What do you think? Do you agree with wrapping a baby like that or not?

My paternal grandmother comes from a tradition of swaddling a baby. My parents hate that.

swaddling actually serves a purpose. it mimics the security of the womb. it can reduce crying when they're fussy. it can help them sleep longer. prevents scratching their face. gives them proper sleep position, that helps keep the baby on their back which is recommended because it reduces the risk of SIDS

but you have to do it safely. that's the main thing. not too tight. just snug. looser around the hips/legs. has to be a lightweight material. and you have to make sure to get them out of the swaddle once you see them starting showing signs of rolling over

Your 2nd paragraph might be why my parents hated the way I was swaddled. Base on what they told me, they didn't like it that I was wrapped up kind of tight like a potato, no arms nor leg movements. I was decribed as a naturally calm baby that only cried when I was either hungry, needed my diaper changed or in pain. Overally, I was told I was a relaxed baby.

Babies want to be swaddled.


Up until birth that thing resided in the horrifically tiny space that is a womb. Being swaddled, at least within the first year, reminds them of that and gives them comfort. It’s the same reason why kids asked to be tucked in, the tightness keeps you from moving and comforts you at the same time, makes it easier to fall asleep. There’s no reason not to swaddle a baby as far as I know. Is there some health magazine that says it’s dangerous or some bullshit pseudo-psychology shit like how Freud said that breastfeeding imprinted a boy’s mother into his ideal woman as an adult?

from the first time a saw it i opposed the prison style.

no arm movement.

danger of rolling! but can't grab anything.

later i saw the strait coat jacket of insane and saw the association.

cold is no excuse, adults don't do that for cold!

I suppose it depends on the way a baby gets swaddled. My parents didn't like it because I had no arm nor leg movements.

What do you think is more comfortable for a baby: 1) being swaddled and unable to move arms, or 2) punching itself in the head repeatedly because said baby can't control his/her movements on account of BEING A BABY?

Neither me nor my sisters punches ourselves repeatedly over the head. My mother was a temporarily housewife when we were born (my parents didn't want leave us with daycare) and would be watching us all the time. Cotton mitten were placed, that makes baby avoid harming him/herself from involuntary moves such as heading the head or scratching themselves in the face.

I swaddled my babies but my parents always have a fit about it. Saying it's like a straight jacket 😂 it must be that generation being really against swaddling

I always do that to newborn babies, mastly for temperate and to keep them in a position as they are in womb.

I guess it's the way I was swaddled my parents didn't like. It was done a bit too tight.
