Why would a person burn a bridge when you’re trying to make amends and see if things are okay?

This person, who I thought was my friend, had been continually violating boundaries and saying things that are untrue about me. I was starting to feel like I may have hurt their feelings accidentally so I called them to see if we were cool and wanted to apologize if I needed to.

They said that their comments mean nothing and they don’t want to be friends with me because they feel like they have to walk on eggshells now. That was not the answer I was expecting and it seemed pretty defensive.

3 days later, they called me back and doubled down on their stance. They said that I was a disservice to myself for thinking like this and a disservice to them for telling them. Then they said that “they don’t know about me” and “only God can repair our friendship”.

Something is really off to me. Sure, I could’ve spoken up at the first boundary violation/inappropriate comment, however I wanted to show them grace because people have bad days. However, I feel like they’re afraid to tell the truth or they’re just jealous of me or something.
