Boyfriend says I'm lucky to be with him?

We haven't been together very long and recently my boyfriend exclaimed in front of a mutual friend and myself that I was LUCKY to be with him. I was offended. He went on to say it was because of things he bought (like tickets to a show) or money he spent etc... I told him I never ask him to get these things and I don't need them. Long story short, he apologized and said he didn't mean it in that way, he just wants to show he cares and that's why he does things for me. I'm not buying it. What, if anything else could he have meant? I would never say those words to anyone! Is he trying to bring me down or make me feel inadequate? My friend suggested that because I'm maybe better looking (not shallow, mind you) he is just being insecure? I don't know... help? oh and I'm very independent actually.

I don't know what he meant but maybe give it a try to doing something for him and making him feel lucky/ special. Maybe he was just saying that because he feels a little upset or hurt over the fact that you haven't bought him anything or gone out of your way for him? So he tried to make himself feel better and get over it by making a joke and putting you down a little bit...

I don't know if you have or haven't. This was just a thought that popped into my head when I read it. You should talk to him about it more then. It really seems to me like he meant the apology.

"you're lucky to have me because I spend money on you." wow yea you said it just so perfectly. when he brought up the money thing I can see now that's probably what he meant. Thanks! Hmm and I do know he's insecure so its very likely those are his motives :/ now I have stuff to think about!

Usually in a relationship (unhealthy one) someone thinks he/she is the better one. Better looking, richer, more successful, etc. So he/she thinks that the other one is the lucky one. Maybe this is the case here or maybe he's just insecure.

You might be taking his words all wrong. Lots of girls say that, they never asked for anything. Yet if you don't do all these things they sure get annoyed very fast...

You should just tell him he's lucky to be with you. To me if I'm with a great girl I do feel lucky. Lucky to have met her and having the chance to build something. If you don't feel lucky tobe with him may be you feel he's nothing special.

I suppose I could be misconstruing his words. But I'm not one of "those" girls and I felt he was throwing his gifts (which I truly appreciate) in my face. I get how you feel lucky that's sweet, but I felt he meant lucky as in "lucky I picked you" or something. But thanks friend!

And I've been with "appreciative"girls who say just that but are not appreciative at all, they take it for granted. It's like if my girlfriend was putting on her best outfit, spend hours getting ready, look beautiful. And when I see her I act likeit's nothing special. Lots of girls do that to guys. We do tons of romantic things, spend lots of money, do special things, and sometimes we barely get a thank you.
