1 yAn "adult child" is an oxymoron. Either they are an adult, or they are a child, or they are transitioning between the two. If they are an adult, they should take some financial responsibility for their life. A child is fully supported by their parents. An adult is not.
I may or may not agree with a parent charging their child rent as soon as they turn 18. It depends on the situation. But when the kid gets much older, they need to stop depending on their parents.
'Weening' is a process. If a kid is still fully dependent on their parents in their 20s, then they have not been properly weened. Charging rent is a good step. Kicking them out is not bad either.

they are always our children, even if they are adults...

Anonymous(45 Plus)1 yNot in the least. I'd do that and smile if I were your child (I assume they work full-time).
I get this is a hard decision to come to. Because you want to ween them off you. But you want them to know you still care about them and are there for them. I do think this has to be on a case by case basis.
I remember when I was young my parents always had the rule that I could live there rent free. But that I had to either be working full-time or going to school full-time. I think they were less concerned about me living there and more concerned with whether my growth was stagnating. As a parent you just know you're not going to be around forever and want to know your kids can stand on thier own.

Too if the parent don't want to live with their child anymore then they better let him keep his money so he would be able to moved faster, taking his money is just a ridiculous things to do especially since young worker usually never gain a lot of money.
As a matter of fact my family house rent is 450 euros a months so paying 300 euros alone is a total ripoff

Anonymous(30-35)1 yyes. also, do you make them pay every 2 weeks? in the real world, rent is due only once a month. change it to that. because every 2 weeks a bit weird.

Well if they're doing it every two weeks that means they're making sure they want their money they're trying to teach that person a valuable lesson and yes it's good because if they were out on their own is going to cost them anywhere from $800 to $2,000 a month they're just trying to teach that person something if they don't do it then in their own way they're not being the best parent they're trying to better the person they really are and give that person responsibilities to manage money.

u 1 yNot at all. If anything it should be more. My boyfriend pays 1k a month for example. I'd expect the same for my kids if they are adults and living with us.
20 Reply1.6K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Nope 150$ is dirt cheap. They could kick you out instead and you'd be paying way more for rent

m 1 yWTF? Who charges their own child rent? What's next, compensation for the time you had to spend with him/her as a toddler?

it's a very wise decision... an adult not studying child can work and pay their bills, so why should parents do it? It's part of growing up (don't mistake being an adult, which is being 18 years old, with being grown up... which is mostly about maturity) and taking responsibility for themselves.

Yeah, they can pay for their own stuff, for sure, they don't need pocket money anymore. But charging children rent is absurd. I have never seen that happening.

Nice society, right? 🤣🤣🤣 - 1 y
It happen everywhere even in France it just depend on the family, my father tried to charge me money for rent (200 euros while i earned only 400 euros and the rent was 450 euros) that was just ridiculous it would mean I would pay more rent me alone than both my parents ever did together.
I said no and he never bring it up again. - 1 y
@DryGermanGuy isn't it natural? Your kid is an adult, works and you still want to pay their water or electricity bills? For me it's part of growing up. If my kid earns but want to stay with us, needs to participate... I can't see a reason for special treatment of full capable human beings.
My kids offered it by themselves. They knew the costs and offered to participate until they moved out. - 1 y
@IslaTheWitch That's just ridiculous how the hell is the child going to be able to be independant and live on his own if his own parents take half of his money?
It just doesn't make sense it was ok before but once they hit 18 suddenly they're not family anymore and are stranger? If the family struggle with money is it a things but if not it's just ridiculous. Make me think of the brother of my grandfather who wanted to sell his old car to him for 5000 euros while he proposed only 1200 euros for his friend, people don't know the meaning of family anymore... - 1 y

Participating with let's say groceries or household items or stuff that only the children use, sure, why not. But charging them rent is just twisted. Young people start with so many financial responsibilities into their adult life, especially in the United States with these high student debts, they need every dollar they can save.
2.8K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. No, where else are they only gonna pay 300 in rent? A shitty new Mexico trailer park without water and power?

1 y$300 a month for rent? Heat, utilities, ac, parking, cable?
It's $1450 for a one bedroom in a illegal basement apartment here. You can't POSSIBLY be complaining about your sweetheart deal!!!10 Reply
1 yDepends on the specifics, I suppose, but that sounds extremely reasonable. $300/mo rent is better than they would get from anyone else.
10 Reply$300 a month sounds fair, if they're working full time
10 Reply3K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. That is cheap. No one should be complaining about that.
10 Reply1.1K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. If you live with your parents and you are an adult you should contribute on your own not to be asked for it. It is the right thing.

1 yMaybe not every 2 weeks, but maybe just $300 every month instead? Assuming they have a job that can cover that
00 Reply 3.5K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. No, not at all. I would charge more because of inflation.

1 yWhere do you reside? Out here that would be a very generous rate, as small bedrooms without kitchen privileges can be more than $1200/month.

1 yCompared to what that adult would be paying irl? No. Its cheap.
00 Reply Nah, my parents had the same price except it was charged per month like normal bills.
00 Reply582 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. That's pennies compared to what they would pay out in the real world. When I was living home 40 years ago my parents charged me 50 dollars a week.
