If we ask old friends to meet up (reunion) for lunch/dinner, who should pay?

Mom used to have an annual reunion picnic. She'd charge everyone $15.00 and they could come to the picnic, hang out and talk with everyone else, the money would pay for the food and drinks and the rent of the grove and my neighbor (whose wife was an alumni) would bring his records & PA and DJ the affair. Everyone loved it, had a great time and looked forward to doing it again the following year.

@VIVANT All of her school friends thought so, too. She'd get at least 50 to 75 people every year. The only other expense was sending out the info on when and where the picnic was gonna be. She got her local church to loan her the extra tables and chairs she needed.

I am doing that at the weekend and we will just split the bill, we are adults and can agree to simple things like that. With other friends that I meet up with regularly one of us will grab the bill that week, ditto buying rounds, if we just have one drink, we rotate it.

If it's just 2 or 4 people, you pay. If it's 10 or 20 or 30 or more, announce it as an event and here's how much it costs, please pay by such-and-such a date to reserve your place. Add 10% to the actual cost because things will always cost more than your best estimates. You can pay for all the flowers or something, "flowers provided by Joan Smith," etc.

If you asked them and invited them then yes, you should pay. It is courtesy.
Here we literally get into fights on who will treat because we all want to treat/pay for each other - at least in my circle 😅- and if someone paid the bill last time, the other will definitely get it the next time or arrange another meet up in order to treat etc.

Who invites, pays. Unless is mutual invitation, in this case it's situational. I'm not the worst cook and I own a presentable house therefor I invite old friends to dinner in my house. This makes money questions irrelevant

If it’s a group of friends, I would say everyone pays for their own meal. If it’s one friend, the person asking could offer to pay, or each pay for their own.

tough call.
If money is tight maybe get that out of the way in the beginning, rather than that awkward moment when the cheque arrives.
We have a group of classmates, and we get together once in a while when someone from out of town comes back, but I have no clue how it started, but we all just pay for ourselves.
That ends a lot of drama and possible bent feelings.

It depends on how the questions was asked.

If the questions was asked similar to "I would like for us to gather for a reunion" whilst depicting the place anr time. Then it is right that the person who proposed, should pay.

If the question was asked similar to "We should meet up for a reunion" Without depicting specific details, then it is right that every person available at the "reunion" should pay their fare share.

If I invite, I pay. if one cannot afford that, ask in a way that makes it clear that it is on the people who come. "Like "We are all meeting at restaurant xxxxx for lunch/dinner on (Date). Hope you can make it."
