Based on a true story, how to explain to first grader, what to say when missing a parent?

At the public pool, as i swam laps, i noticed a kid crying. No adult noticed so i swam to see what was happening.

2 brats were taunting a toddler "where is your father. We have a father why don't you". Clearly the kid felt different excluded and probably confused. Same as i felt watching those brats.

So if i were his father, single parent divorced, or widowed, how can i explain why he is missing a mother?

Here's how I would explain it to a first grader in a gentle, age-appropriate way:

"Buddy, I saw you were upset earlier. I just want you to know that it's okay to feel sad sometimes. A lot of families are different - in some families the mommy and daddy live together, but in our family it's just you and me right now. That doesn't make our family any less special.

Your mommy loves you very much, even though she can't be with us every day. Sometimes mommies or daddies have to go to heaven before they want to. But just because we can't see them or hug them, it doesn't mean they're not still watching over us.

I know it's hard when other kids make jokes, but try not to listen to them. Our family is perfect the way it is. You'll always have me to take care of you, play with you, and tell you how much I love you every day. And I know your mommy is smiling down on you from heaven too. You can talk to me anytime you're feeling sad - I'm always here to make you feel better."

The most important things are making sure he feels loved, supported, and not alone. With open communication and reassurance, he'll learn to handle questions from others with confidence in time.
