You invite a family member out to eat for bday but that family member has a spouse and wants to bring them along, do you pay for both or just the one?

My husband asked what I thought about taking his mom to dinner for her bday and I told him it was okay if it was what he wanted to do. He later comes to me and says his mom wants to know if she can bring her spouse meaning can we also pay for her spouse as well? I tell him "well it's not his birthday... it's hers" I then tell him "well me and you need to look at our finances because this is how much I have and you want to get your hair cut and I'd like my hair done plus I have credit card payments waiting to be deducted" the next thing I know his mom calls and ask him directly if her spouse can come and he says YES while looking me in the eyes... I was so upset because I literally told him before she called we need to look over our finances first...

aside from that we just spent close to $300 for Thanksgiving food so that his mom and her spouse plus sister can come and join us to eat and then she has the will to ask if we can pay for both her and him when we only invited HER! Mind you it's just them two but we have 2 small kids and a baby on the way and I just feel like it's inconsiderate to request something like it when we're trying to be nice and celebrate you... am I wrong for thinking this way? How would any of you handle it if this happened to you?
