Is my mum’s advice right?

A group of three of us are chipping in for our friend *Tracey*’s ceramic cat ornament for her fiftieth birthday. One of the people chipping in is her brother. The other two will contribute $10 each and I’ll pay $20. I wanted to give Tracey some extra gifts, cat slippers and a cat mug just from me. My mum who grew up poor, advised me to just get the cat slippers as the extra gift. That otherwise I’d make the others feel bad for not being able to be more generous.
