Should I feel guilty for not contacting a former classmate who also moved to the city I just moved to?

We never talked to each other during our school days. Neither of the two of us ever took the initiative to START talking. Plus, I can't really think of any hobbies that we have in common, a part from just emotional commonalities. And , I see that she has a lot of friends, and so probably never thinks about me. But for some reason I still feel like I'm being rude for not stepping up and ending the silence. I mean, what if I did start talking to her, and she realized that I was worth having as a close friend? Then I could have a friend. But I know that that's probably a long shot.

You definitely should NOT feel guilty for not contacting this former classmate.

To make this easier, I'll do you one better.

It would actually be not-at-all appropriate if you were to reach out to this classmate given everything you've said about her, and your (non) history.

She would think its really weird if you did try and contact her on the basis that she is a former classmate and living in the same city.

That doesn't mean you can't reach out, if you're connected some other way (mutual facebook friends for example).

At that point its totally fine to say "hey I think we went to high school. You look familiar eventhough we didn't know each other."

But only if you're saying hi based on the mutual friends thing. Not the highschool reason.

This surprised me. I don't know if you've moved to a city where you just don't know anybody (understandable). Or if this is more of a general, long-term feeling. That last line made me so sad.

If you don't have any other connection with her, then you are better to try and get to see if somebody different might end up becoming a friend if you like them.
