A couple weeks ago a friend of mine had a stroke, she's okay and is incredibly lucky to have no long term damage thank goodness but gosh it was so scary!

Went to hang out with her last weekend and we all cope with dark humour so I made her this cake (unfortunately the top got messed up on the way there from the heat of the car)

Do you know anyone who has had a stroke?

She's doing good though, obviously still recovering and the more tired she gets the more slurred and messed up her speech is. She's taking time off work, isn't allowed to drive, vape or smoke weed (She's very cut up about these things).

Strokes are the cause of death for almost half the people in my family. It's on both parent's side. So I'm pretty familiar with them. Strokes really fuck people up. They can be devastating. Having the stroke kill you is often preferable to living.

She needs to be very careful. Having one stroke makes having another one far more likely. She needs to be very good to her health - which means knocking off the vaping and weed, among other things. If she wants to be a zombie for the rest of her life, she can keep doing that shit. Not to mention the affect on her family if they become full time caretakers instead of living the life they want.

If you are her friend, you should do everything you can to get her to stop unhealthy choices.

Yes, mom, grandma, Russ (a guy I used to work with), John Fetterman, Curly Howard, Larry Fine, probably a few others I don't recall.
There's a Dr. in Florida that can practically cure a stroke with just one injection in the back of the neck. His last name is, Tobanik (sp?). There's quite a few videos about him on YT.
Why would ANYBODY want to vape? I just don't understand the attraction!! You put some plastic thing in your mouth and suck on it and bunch of smoke comes out of your mouth! BIG FUCKING DEAL!!! Does that make you special? Did you know that stuff you're sucking on is made from formaldehyde? Essentially, you're embalming yourself!! My guess is that THAT'S the reason she HAD a stroke!!

I work in health care and I’ve had a lot of residents/clients that have a had strokes. And a family friend has had 3. In his case his entire personality changed and he divorced his wife; bad habits like constantly eating out, smoking and drinking took over his life and now we’re just waiting to see his obituary I know that sounds awful but it’s the only end result that he’s going to have since he refuses to take care of himself or take his medications to potentially reduce strokes

Outside of myself, no, not personally. I had a minor stroke when I was 17. Lost about 50% control over the left side of my body for 8 months, I also lost my “inner monologue” in my mind, I couldn’t hear myself think and I couldn’t visualise anything for those 8 months. Did some physical therapy to regain my left side and I’m completely back to normal now, and my inner monologue also came back eventually.

My father has had two. He’s disabled from the first one, but at the same time better than I would’ve expected based on how he was right afterwards. Garbled speech, couldn’t write, etc. He got it back though, as an elderly man, no less. 8 years later, still kicking at 93.

He just has to use a walker, his right side is partially paralyzed, particularly his leg. He scoots himself around the first floor in a wheelchair. But he’s still mentally very sharp, it just takes him time to find words sometimes. But at this point, I don’t know how much is the stroke and how much is just being old as fuck, lmao.

He had another small one last fall, but he came out of it ok, not really any worse for wear. Had to be in a rehab hospital for like six weeks though.

Yes, my wife;s sister had one a couple of years ago. She called the paramedics and when they showed up they wanted to give her anti coagulants and take her to the hospital. She is a nurse and thinks she knows everything about medicine so she declined. Now she has permanent disabilities.

I know a guy at the gym I have known for 40 years. A few weeks ago i saw him and half of his face was sagging and he was having trouble walking. This guy trains pretty hard. I saw him 2 days ago and he is much improved. He is very motivated so I imagine he will make a full recovery.

two of them closer to me, who fortunately... didn't show a permanent or long term damage, and started to recover fairly quickly but, have to check on their health all the time

also know of a couple more acquaintances that suffered some for of impairment, one of them, of older age... who later developed complications from it and other associated illnesses

and yes, it is very scary... when you read about the many reasons why it could happen to almost anyone, so... get your general check ups at least once a year people (KnockingOnWoodATrillionTimes)

I had a stroke at age 16 that damaged the right half of my brain. It resulted from a clot that a dissection caused by athletic exertion.

If your friend had an ischemic (clot) stroke and is obese, I highly recommend using macrofactor to slowly chip away at the weight. I use it to manage my bodybuilding goals. It's great. Make sure that she's keeping up with her physical and occupational therapy. You have a window of a few years to gain back functionality after a stroke. If you snooze on it and don't try, you're stuck with your disabilities permanently.

Home exercise programs are uncomfortable and boring, but not being able to live independently is a thousand times worse. So anything you can do to push her to grind out alevery bit of recovery possible is a major contribution to her long term quality of life.

I worked with a guy who did for a while. He was young, barely 25. He had a stroke a few years before, said it started in his leg while he was driving. He managed to get all the way home and put the car in park before collapsing face-first onto the steering wheel and setting off the horn so his family could find him. He obviously made a full recovery since then.

My dad had a bunch of “little ones” and did not tell anyone until much later… like I was taking care of his medical bills or something and read a patent report saying he had had several. Nothing to where his speech was slurring or anything, and he probably had a few I guess he was never aware of until a check up or going for something else. But there were a few where he was having issues but didn’t get it checked and no one knew, even being in the same house. Then he moved into assisted living and had a bunch more but wasn’t telling anyone, and none of the staff was mentioning anything… this was before he died.

My brother had one when he was 4 years old. It was pretty crazy because my mom said it completely changed him/his personality. Just being that young it really took the life out of him. It gave him a permanent learning disability. He still made it through school just graduated a little late, had lots of therapy to help him. Now works a normal job, drives, has a girlfriend, does all the adult things anyone else can do just took him a little longer to get there

yes, and we get a fair number of possible stroke calls.
We have protocols we do to see if it is a possible stroke, notify the hospital that we are on the way with a possible stroke as soon as we think it is, and more details to follow.
That way they can assemble their stroke team, then haul ass to the stroke center.
The standard for TPA is within 3 hours of the last known well time, but it has been administered later than that is some cases.

I had a mini stroke. Woke up alone in a house i didn't know (it was mine) couldn't figure out why I was in Houston Texas for 3 hours (I moved there 10 years prior) pretended nothing was wrong. It took half a year to "remember" the previous 10 years. I dont think I remember them really I just remember them from what my friends and family told me i/we did. Only my middle daughter realized something was wrong. Not my wife. Not my twin brother. Nobody.
