How do you handle friends who get overly possessive and awkward?

A few of my friends tend to get possessive about me, insisting on 1-on-1 time to the point that it's sometimes awkward. While it's nice to have the occasional brunch with only one or two friends, I've always felt it was rude not to be inclusive of others. One gal was away for a while and actually seemed pissed that I didn't drop all my plans to go spend the day with her, but I'd already promised to go to brunch with two other gals from church. I wasn't going to be rude and cancel, but I suggested the other gal just come join us. She made the whole rest of the afternoon very awkward, acting like we had inside jokes, etc. when really I hadn't seen or heard from her in a year.

Three months later she corners me at an event and says, "Just promise me that you're still mine." I had no idea what she was talking about. I suggested we talk over the weekend, but I haven't seen her since, except for one time she turned up at church and I left to avoid anything awkward.

Do you have a friend who's so possessive they make everything awkward?

Sounds like someone's poisoning the well to me. If it's suddenly become a problem anyway.

But personally, if I don't hang out with someone 1 on 1 I wouldn't consider them a close friend so they might also be wrestling with that.

You respond, "I enjoy spending time with lots of people, but I've had a bad experience before, and now I don't let anybody have an exclusive franchise on me. You know, it's kind of a boundary thing I'm working on. I hope that makes sense!"

Honestly OW, that's what occurred to me when she said it and I distanced myself from her completely. I never gave her any cause to think I was more than just a coach or mentor to her. I didn't say anything to her since we were in public. I just said that it sounds like a personal matter that shouldn't be discussed at a work event. She can find me at church. She never bothered. And I'm careful not to be in a room with her anymore.

I haven’t had a friend like that since high school. I dropped her when it got just too awkward.

Your friends want to bang you.

They want to spend time alone with you so they can try to talk you into letting them bang you.

Recognize that this is what's happening, and act accordingly, depending on whether you want to be banged by that person or not.

I do not have many friends anymore and I never really had any that were posessive.

Conversation and making sure boundaries are given if they over do it or push those then they are no longer friends.

I set boundaries and if they're crossed too often I disengage.
