Usually a good talk helps them realize it’s time to end things. My parents divorced because my mom cheated on my dad with some random guy at a bar, and he only found out because once she sobered up she realized that was the final nail in the coffin of their marriage and came clean. Things hadn’t been good for them, there was a lot of fighting and a refusal to talk it out anymore, and she was able to recognize her error because she’s been through years and years of therapy. Not everyone is so privileged to be self-aware enough to see these things, so talking them through their motivations, recognizing their betrayal of trust alongside with recognizing how they’re allowing themselves to invest in two relationships that aren’t working as they are is usually enough to help them end things at minimum

Try to help them? They know the pros and cons of what they are doing. So precisely how are you going to help them? Tell them they are making a different choice than I would? It's their life. Adults stuff up their lives through bad choices all the time.

I have a standing agreement with my best friend, that if either of us does something like that, we'll slap the other in the face and bring them back to reality.

It's important to be bale to call people out for bad behaviour, especially your friends.

It depends on the friend. My guitarist either had a steady girlfriend or was married and, in both cases, he still fucked other women behind her back!! Quite often, the girlfriend or wife already knew so, there was no point and, as my singer used to say, "You can't tell a cementhead anything!" So, I just never said a word! His girlfriend's did all the talking once they found out.

That actually happened to me. My buddy cheated on his girlfriend with an Italian stripper when he was in the Army. I didn't say anything to him direcrtly, but me and my other buddies were cheering and hoping he leaves her for an Italian girl, because literally nobody liked his girlfriend.

If they’re married, you can talk to the person who’s cheating and tell him/her to stop—making it clear and threaten her /him that if he or she continues, you’ll inform their spouse. I think this is the right approach.

I'd certainly mention that it's unhealthy and ask why. That would likely distance me from that friend. That's a level of dishonesty that I couldn't support.
