At what age do parents usually step out of the picture completely?

Never. I still get help from mine regularly and I've needed every bit of it or I'd be in rough shape. Even when they die, the lessons they taught you should carry on with you and effects of everything they taught you are still part of who you are and always will be, for better or for worse.

Depending on the situation I can feel 12 again... sometimes its 65.

It really depends on your circumstances. Mine disappeared when I was 12; I saw them one more time at 16, and since then they have been ancient history. My husband lost both his parents at 17.
