My mother was abusive. Like many abused children, i grew closer to my mother hoping that if i loved her enough she wouldn’t hurt me anymore. So i was more or less a momma’s boy growing up. I knew my father, but we mostly disregarded each other.
As a teen, i was able to observe how other parents interacted with their children. I realized something was very wrong and i began distancing myself from my mother. By then she had divorced my dad and, out of spite, got custody of me in the divorce. So there were no opportunities to amend that relationship at the time.
As an adult, i had questions that only my dad could answer honestly. So i tracked him down and rekindled my relationship with him. It was good. He was unbelievably understanding and forgiving of me. I carried some guilt for accepting my mother’s lies about him for so long. We made amends and developed a relationship.
Unfortunately, i couldn’t see him often because he lived kind of far away. Then he got sick with cancer and it took him unexpectedly quickly. Technically the treatment killed him, but that’s a whole different story. To this day i regret not knowing my dad better, and i resent my mother for almost everything she did to me and my dad.
Only a few years ago i finally quit reaching out to her at all. She never took my calls, or returned them. She only asks about me to my sister in order to preserve the illusion of the “good mother”. I suspect that she never forgave me for going back to my dad, and in hindsight she never really cared for me anyway.
I do not love my mother.
I didn’t love my father enough and i live with the pain of that almost every single day.
They are no longer with us but I did love them. They were good parents.
Nope.
Very much so.
