Since Felicity was born, I've realised just how difficult becoming a new mum can be, especially when I feel like I have to navigate my in-laws' intense involvement at the same time. I genuinely believe my mother-in-law has many admirable qualities. She has overcome cancer several times, cared for others, runs a charity, and is incredibly generous. However, I also find her controlling, overbearing, competitive, and dismissive of my feelings.
I often feel judged by her. Over the years I've been left with the impression that she sees me as fat, lazy and unintelligent, and comments about my body during pregnancy only reinforced those feelings. She regularly pays for things and buys expensive gifts, which I'm grateful for, but it can sometimes feel like generosity comes with influence. My own family are very different - they are laid back, accepting and supportive, and never feel the need to compete.
Since Felicity arrived, the intensity has increased. My in-laws want to see her constantly, spoil her, and be heavily involved in every aspect of her life. I sometimes feel they are competing with my family over time and gifts. I don't fully trust my mother-in-law to care for Felicity unsupervised because I don't feel she pays enough attention to practical things like changing her properly, yet she often watches everything I do as though she's assessing me. Her saying she wanted Felicity to call her "Mama" deeply upset me because I am her mother.
The hardest part is feeling unable to talk openly to my husband. Whenever I raise concerns, I feel dismissed or that he becomes defensive, leaving me feeling alone. Sometimes it feels like there are three people in our marriage instead of two, and I've even found myself thinking that moving away might be the only way for us to have space to become our own family.

First of all, I am sorry about the difficulties you are facing. You have to accept certain realities from the start. For instance, if you are marrying the son of a wealthy family, you should have anticipated that the family—and especially your husband's mother—would interfere in many matters. You should have realized that your mother-in-law would be prone to jealousy and would try to put herself first. Didn't you discuss these things with your husband before marrying him? You should have known that he would often side with his family. I certainly do not condone your mother-in-law's behavior; however, I am surprised that you are acting as if everything changed overnight. You should have established your boundaries right from the beginning—for example, by refusing expensive gifts. I think you need to set your own rules now. Tell your husband that you want to raise your child in a modest way. Maintain strong communication with your husband. It will take a long time for them to respect you, but at least you can be a mother who stands firm on her rules for the sake of your child.
We did discuss these things especially are children being humble and not spoilt but not really a discussion you have with grandparents nor will they respect it especially boomers they always think they know better.
His mother has always been extreme and thrown money at everything but she told us she was not gonna felicity silly gifts and instead invest in her future which i thought was a much more sensible decision but now its come down to it everything is expensive jewellery etc.
My parents are about the here and now and buying her normal things like teddies, baby essentials, clothes not a royal mint worth £100
I never thought we'd be watched so much and I didn't know my husband gave her a spare key to are house 🤦🏼♀️ i thought she could be trusted and was very naive to the situation with her, it was only to the end of my pregnancy i relised it was her baby not mine
You need to set your own rules as soon as possible. It would even be to your advantage to gather some evidence for the future, in case you end up getting a divorce. If things continue this way, they will claim your child as their own. You will feel like a surrogate mother rather than a real mother. You will be devalued—feeling less and less valued with each passing day. You must quickly establish your own boundaries and show them your tough side.
I really hope it doesn't end like that as I love my husband deeply and at the start of the baby being born i think it bought us really close and I fell for him even deeper in love then I already had been.
he's been super supportive, took good care of me, helped out with the baby and around the house.
Its just his mum who adds the stress but there's no going between a man and his mother.
I have a photo of her holding are baby over the cooker whilst making sauce. Everyone else thinks its funny and cute besides me and my family I think its extremely stupid and disrespectful to my feelings. Of course I wouldn't want that and I wouldn't find her endangering my baby as funny or cute.
When i confronted my husband he says I dont trust them and im crazy.
His mum also can't change a nappy to save her life and is more focused of being a performative gran rate then just being a gran. "Look at me everyone im changing her nappy " no your not your smearing shit everywhere and leaving her in a wet nappie because your more focused about making a song and dance about it.
Once I get through the door at her house its like my baby isn't mine and she's passing her around and trying to wake her up. My stress levels are always on high alert with her.
In the past i could ignore her ways because it was towards me but its my daughter and my top priority is to protect her
As soon as his mun walks through the door the atmosphere instantly changes to stress and chaos and she strives off seeing me slightly struggle. I think if I was to die tomorrow I know id no longer be my babies mother. She wants my baby call her "mama" ... wtf.
I feel like im in a room full of crazy people telling me im the the crazy one
You're in a really difficult situation. Thinking about you makes me anxious. You can face any hardship for your child. You need to set rules for your child now. Don't trust your husband; he's the kind of person who calls you crazy at the slightest argument.
You married a weak man. Now you are suffering the consequences of a stupid action
Tell your husband to handle her
