Why do some parents keep hitting their children even when they’re adults?

During an argument, my mother tried to slap me and I grabbed her wrist before it could even connect. I told her 'Do not touch me'' and explain she can argue verbally all she wants but can't get physical anymore, never again with me or she won't like it if I were to reply in kind. I had enough. She's always been doing that to me since childhood and really think that she had the rights to slap me just because she's my mother.

I was likely only going to push her if she started hitting again but needlessly to say she got scared right away and got my point. She's a manager herself and sure doesn't do that to her employees if there was an argument. She has argue with other people and doesn't do that to the other adults.

But with us (even as adults), it's like parents think that they can freely slap us whenever the heck they want to on every single argument and we should continue take it and take it... as if we were a garbage bin they can vent out to. Aren't we worthy of the same self-restrain she shows towards others, towards her employees?
