How might a casual relationship change a friendship dynamic?

It could get weird. I had a friend who I was really close to. She really was my best friend for a while. One night she confessed that she had feelings for me. I really liked her but not that way. I was involved with somebody else which she knew.
Afterwards I started to think about it. We always had fun when we hung out and we could tell each other anything. the more I thought about it the more I thought that maybe we should be more than friends. By the time we talked about it, she had changed her mind. Things got weird after that and she went to grad school and I never saw her again.

In a purely platonic friendship, people don't overthink anything. Once romantic or sexual intimacy enters the picture, a subtle layer of self-consciousness often takes over. I am generalizing, of course. Many people have none of these issues.
