"I am your friend, but you are not mine."?

Can this occur? Does this make sense? I am confounded by the thought but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. Is it possible that you confide a person but they do not confide in you? That they are a bastion of strength for you but require no aid from you and are more than aware of your "uselessness" towards their own causes? It isn't really that they are cruel but rather they just seem almost disconnected but more than willing to help all the same. It's like they care for the needs of others but don't think they can be helped.

I don't get the sense there's anything I would normally think such as atonement for past behaviors or paying it forward. I just wonder if anyone else has come across this or is this way.
