What's Causing Your Skin to Break Out?

Just about everyone wants clean, clear, glowing skin. It's one of the markers of beauty and health, but often times, many of us seem to break out continuously and we don't know why.

What's Causing Your Skin to Break Out?

1. Hormones

Yes, hormones do play an active roll, or should I say, rollercoaster, with our skin. The likes of the three P's: puberty, periods, and pregnancy can all trigger acne as can things like certain medications.

2. Smoking

Most people know that smoking can cause your skin to age more rapidly than those who don't, but smoking can also trigger skin to produce more oil and cause you to breakout more.

3. You're scrubbing to death

If a little scrubbing is good, a lot must be even better, right? Nope! When you go super ham on your face using all sorts of abrasive cloths and brushes, and roughly handling your face, you may be helping to scrub acne bacteria into your pores and face making the problem worse. Be gentle grasshopper!

4. You're a picker

Use an acne cream rather than picking at your face. You open up your skin, spread the bacteria, leave dark marks and scars, and/or push more bacteria underneath your skin exacerbating the problem when you constantly pick at your acne.

5. You don't wash your face...or enough

Before bed, after the gym, after touching your face all day, you need to make sure you are washing your face especially to get rid of make-up you've been wearing all day. You go to bed, all that stuff rubs on your pillow, you don't wash your pillow, and the cycle of more dirt and bacteria will only continue.

6. You're using dirty old make-up and brushes

Make-up is often the harbinger of bacteria and dirt. It is particularly difficult to clean things like foundation sticks. Make-up does not last forever and the longer you have it, the more likely it is to be filled with dirt and bacteria which you're just spreading all over your face each day. Routinely clean your brushes, and disinfect your make-up, and toss make-up after a few months.

7. You're doing way too much

How can you know if one thing is or isn't working in regards to getting rid of your acne if you're doing 10 things at once. Sure its frustrating, but try using just one or two new products or processes at a time. This way if something makes your skin worse or does nothing, you know to stop, or if you see improvement you can continue. Too much product, especially acne products can irritate the skin and cause rashes/breakouts ironically.

8. You're super sensitive to dyes and detergents

If you've recently started using a new detergent or bought new pillow cases, they may be the cause of your recent breakouts. Some people are really sensitive to these things. Try using natural detergents or going back to your old ones or pillow cases, if you notice a seemingly sudden change in your skin.

9. Oils, hair products, and lotions

Many of these products are not formulated for use on your face or are too heavy for your face and will clog pores like nobodies business. If you notice a lot of acne on the sides of your face and forehead, this may be due to the products you use in your hair, especially as you sleep at night. Try tying your hair back at night and make sure when you go to the salon or use things like hairspray and other products, you thoroughly wash your face after wards. Avoid using heavy oils and lotions and instead look for products specifically made for the face.

10. The sun is your best friend

Stop with the tanning. You sit and bake all day long, your skin will dry to a crisp, and then in response, your skin will then go crazy producing more oils and make your face break out.
