I have tried growing a beard once. I was looking 10 years older and 20 pounds fatter, so I never tried again.

I look better clean-shaven anyway, because I am skinny.

More or less, I believe beard looks better on fat guys. Clean-shaven face, on skinny guys.

Beard looks good on muscular ones too. And on some skinny guys. And it doesn't make anyone look fatter, often compete opposite... Maybe it made you look too skinny and added too much to your face?

I believe on muscular guys, the 2 days unshaved look is better, not so much a full beard. And I don't think it made me skinnier. It usually makes fat guys skinnier and vice versa. But in both cases it makes you look older. I was 23 when I did it, and I looked like 30 with it... not so flattering. On the other hand, after some age beard makes you look younger. A 60 yer old guy with a beard, usually looks younger than someone who's also 60 and clean.

I always go clean, and I've been told I look around 20 even if I'm 26. I consider it a good thing, to look younger.

My guess why many guys in our days grow beard is this. They want to look older. I was shocked when I found out that guys with a hermit-like beards where only 20-21.

Yeah, some just look baby-faced and wants to look more mature. Beards have that effect.
You do you, whatever feels best for yourself.

But I don't agree that it would make skinny people fatter. That ofc depends on the style:

I don't really care what others do with their facial hair, but the notion of a young man sporting facial hair that would have looked out of place ever since the Victorian era ended, has always struck me as faintly ridiculous...

I have to disagree. I think that some folks may "rock" the beard and look cool with it but I believe that probably every guy looks better clean shaven. I like stubble too but clean shaven just wins everytime for me.

I can't grow much of a beard, and I blame my Asian Face. All I think I could grow would be a light Muttonchop, with a Soulpatch, and a Split Moustache... But I should grow it out to see if I'm right!

I used to have a beard, but I shaved it because it seems to be more of a hipster thing now and hipsters ruin everything. I've now gone back to rocking just the mustache. My lady friend says it looks creepy, so now I keep it just to mess with her.

Beards are more of a hipster thing now, just Google image search the word "hipster" and at least 90% of the photos are dudes with beards. For now, I'll just stick with my sweet mustache. I would never compare myself to Tom Selleck, but that man has rocked a pretty fantastic mustache his entire career.

Hipsters like to think they're going against the masses. So they hop into whatever trend they deem to be "alternative" in an attempt to be hip and different, such as having a beard. Clean-shaven is typically considered more professional looking and hipsters want to avoid that more than anything. Some mustaches styles are for hipsters, like the handlebars mustache, I just have a regular mustache. A normal mustache isn't "alternative" enough for them.
