Does Photoshopping Affect Our Perception Of Natural Beauty?

We all must have seen countless alteration of photos in magazines, newspaper, flyers where people manipulate the images & beautify them.

Most of us are well aware of the tricks and tweaks that are applied to the final photographs we pine over on magazine covers, editorial spreads, and fashion ads.

As a trend, celebrity Photoshopping is frequently criticized for promoting unrealistic body standards that, at worst, can leave the star looking almost inhuman.

And it's pretty pervasive. Everyone from Kylie Jenner to Jonh Mayer have been accused of peddling falsified images of themselves online.

Here are few celebrity Photoshop mishaps -

1. Kylie Jenner.

Do you see what's off about it?

The wall in the background appears to curve right around where her stomach bends in.

For what it's worth, Jenner took to Snapchat not long after to explain that it wasn't Photoshop, it's simply the way her curtain looks.

2. Ariana Grande

Look carefully at her right hand.

Her right hand looks bizarrely long. Not sure what happened there. It could be because of the camera lens. Or maybe someone decided to make Grande's hand twice its usual size in Photoshop.

3. Selena Gomez

Needless to say, their skin is usually not that smooth.

Mayer has a reputation as a prankster, and that Photoshop wasn't convincing.

5. Kim Kardashian West

Kardashian West said someone else Photoshopped it. The entire world is wobbling. The parked car behind her was somehow squished into a triangle, and there seems to be a seam warping everything on the photo's right side. The shadows behind her legs also seem like they were edited. In a statement on her website, Kardashian West said someone else edited the photo to have a mirror effect . She just cropped it, which explains why everything seems wrong on the right side.

These kind of beauty activism are misleading. Its startling to witness celebs appear younger and younger on magazine covers as they're actually getting older. Many people fall victim to unattainable beauty desires—even if deep down we know computer-generated perfection is very hard to achieve.

Photoshopping: Altering images and our minds.

All that doctored beauty is a valid complaint. But it raises another question: what is real beauty? Does beauty always mean reality? While we police every photo to try and uncover its real “truth,” we may also need to start admitting that “real” beauty involves a hefty dip into the fantasy world. Real life beauty comes back swiftly in the form of premature wrinkles, post–high school zits, surprise flab, and undereye circles. But if CoverGirl was selling us the same face we greet every morning in the bathroom mirror, would we still be buying it? No wonder we find ourselves escaping to the glossies to dream of better, albeit digitally enhanced, things.

My point here is, it's not the manipulation of images that's not so wrong. The problem lies with the people who believe that the manipulated images are achievable.

Maybe its very hard to achieve the poreless, hairless, sparkling ideals the media continues to pump out. We can, however, find peace in the fact that so many of these images are an altered version of our perception. We can step back and realize it’s all a Cinderella version of our reality. And when all is said and done, who doesn’t love a good fairytale?
