People only pretend to rise up above cosmetic appeal, but it's unlikely they actually do. One reason not to buy into the self-acceptance mindset is plainly because strangers, friends, and family will all judge you on appearances. You character is inferred by how you dress and groom yourself.

Those who fail to make themselves aesthetically appealing are disliked by a broad grouping of people. If you look homeless, people will assume you're homeless. Regardless of whatever redeeming personality traits you have, no one will want to communicate with you.
Plain people are widely invisible, just obstacles you have to navigate around. If you appear to be just like everyone else, it's assumed you would behave as such. On those terms, there's little reason to invest in people who would tend to be like everyone else.
Attractive people draw positive reactions. People are more tolerant of abhorrent behavior from attractive people. Furthermore they garner praise and appeal from their appearance alone, no personal factors necessary. Anything else would be a bonus, and if they are just personally unlikable, at the very least, they look good.

Wow this man is so honest. Yes, attractive people are worshipped like god, people care about the opinions of attractive people way more than unattractive. I remember when i was going through depression and I didn’t take care of my looks. None of my relatives gave a shit I was depressed, I just looked terrible so they treated me terribly

Beauty standards changes time to time. I don't believe in beauty standards myself!
and today, it's more ridiculous than ever. These standards is based on objectification and a gross amount of superficiality.

The fact remains that there is no fact about beauty. Everything people say and think is nothing but purely their subjective opinion, nothing more, nothing else.

For me, everyone are beautiful and unique in their own way. Every shape, size, color is pretty in their own rights! period!

The fact that beauty standards changes each generation that on it's own is a funny proof how people's subjective ideas is what crafting these standards together!

Superficial society = superficial moral value. Beauty is practically the only one asset a girl has if she doesn't have parents who are capable to finance her several years of Uni or giving her real estate so she gets passive income from it.
Of course less attractive and average girls crave would sell their souls for becoming more beautiful. This is understandable since being at least 7/10 is a requirement for men who won't treat you like an exchangeable toy or getting a job where marketing is involved. Printing obese and less attractive women on magazine covers won't change anything, because beauty is fundamental value like speed of light, not a social construct.
Society is obsessed with sex and sexual attractiveness is just another term for beauty. This makes beauty to an indicator for sex and amount of sex partner a person can get is automatically and indicator for beauty. When an attractive girl says she had just three sex partner, she causes confusion and cognitive dissonance because it doesn't fit into "sex is the greatest achievement you can get" mental dressage of society.

It pisses me off. Beauty brings no value to anything. Just because someone is beautiful doesn't mean they are by default good lovers, partners, employers, or whatever. Quite opposite, in most cases, beautiful people are idiots. And YET, we focus so much on it. We give much, if not most, importance to it. Including myself, and that's what I about myself - that I give benefits of a doubt to beautiful people. Probably because they charmed me with their beauty and I'm hoping there's more to them. This is only for dating, by the way. When it comes to everything else, physical appearance plays no role in my thoughts about people (like friends, coworkers...).
Evolutionary speaking, I do understand why we value beauty so much; every human has a different face, and thus we had to focus on the face of the people because we needed to recognize each other. We developed a magnificent for that. But why is it STILL so important... I don't get that. I guess, in theory, we want to interact with people who are pleasant to look at... but why, you know? Underneath it all, we are all just same skeleton.

Beauty is what people are attracted too, if you sent attracted to someone than there is a low likelihood of you going up and asking them for a date or whatever. Also beauty helps people realize whether someone is healthy or not, people that are more attractive tend to be slimmer and healthier.

You are talking about morons who look pretty (which in fact means 'common').
Beauty includes the brains, in which case it is the source of all joy. All else is bullshit (but you have to be very brainy to get that and to count as beautiful - Paris Hilton, for instance, is just dumb)

Often times we hear that women are interested in a man’s wealth/status/etc, with his looks being secondary importance to her, while on the flip side we hear men are mostly concerned about a woman’s looks. But I think this popular presentation is largely false. After much thought, I have come to the conclusion that a man’s appearance/looks is the most important factor for most women, which I’ll now explain. From the time she’s 16 onward, a woman typically has her basic needs met by her parents, so all she’s really focused on is the thrill of a relationship, and thus she’s not looking at a man’s qualities/money (especially if she’s not even planning to get married until her late 20s). In fact, a man within the age range of 16-30 often doesn’t even have money, especially during high school and college, so all she can even evaluate him on is his looks. Online dating strongly supports this conclusion, since a woman only often sees/responds to a man with good looks. Until she gets into her 30s, women are typically comfortable enough in life or are not looking to settle down yet, so their evaluation of a man is surface level, which means his good looks are the most important factor. Realizing this, it’s not that women prefer “bad boys” or even Alphas, but rather she’s chasing the best looking men and will thus tolerate his bad behavior. And with this in mind, this explains why average to decent looking men don’t get much dating opportunity, especially with good looking women, regardless of how good, accomplished, intelligent, rich, etc, the man is. Meanwhile, on the flip side, a man will often be perfectly content with an average woman’s looks (4 to 7 out of ten), and has no problem dating an average looking woman as long as she has other good qualities he likes.

It's still toxic and damaging, despite the body positivity movement, etc. And Western beauty standards still play a part on what the "ideal beauty" should look like.

I'm a 21 year old Black woman with light brown skin, full lips and natural hair. Although I've been told, even by strangers in the store and other students on campus about how pretty or beautiful I am, I look at the girls on TikTok and Instagram and see that they have curves, pretty skin and long hair. Although I know that a lot of people on Insta and TikTok use facetune and edit their videos and photos to make them look more appealing, I still look at the pictures I've taken and look at me, and I'm dissatisfied with the way that I look. And even though I had like at least 5 boys in high school who had crushes on me, I still felt unpretty because I didn't fit into the "standard beauty".

Despite people becoming more and more aware of how different people look from others and celebrating just how diverse we are, there's still that issue. Having certain traits and/or looking a certain way trumps everything else. And it's just plain sad.

I don’t really subscribe too much to societal expectations of (western) beauty except for maybe the dress code at work. I’m not a big fan of makeup because it feels like a waste of time to me. I wear minimal makeup because I look sleepy without it (at work). But I like to dress however I feel, pretty or causal. I don’t focus too much on “beauty” compared to other women that I know.
Though I’ve been called beautiful before, it doesn’t resonate much with me unless it’s in the context of me being passionate about something I love. That’s where I find beauty— in nature, in feeling and experiences, in passion.

The amount of girls you see these days looking about 20 when their actually 14 is concerning

It’s unrealistic. A lot of my people identify beauty with tons of make up and plastic surgery bodies, but the reality is, those Instagram models still filter the crap out of their photos even with plastic surgery and tons of make up. If that’s what makes someone pretty and worthy, then I want to be totally opposite of that lol I barely wear make up and nothing on me is plastic

People really only care about looks and especially weight. More so if you’re overweight. If you’re underweight your seen and fragile and cute over weight and you’re seen and vile and disgusting. And if you’re ugly too, God FORBID. I just really wish people would just be nice to everyone and build of that and not looks

I love reading these posts on this subject they're so comical especially the women.
Most people are enamored with beautiful people because it's what society says we should aspire to. If you can't be beautiful due to genetic limitations or what have you. You at least want to be attached to beautiful. Because that'll at least increase your stock. I'm single and I'll probably stay single because I'm unattractive. Regardless of how funny, talented, well to do I am. Because I'm ugly I cannot attract and attractive women. My only option is to entertain fat, ugly women. Well I say what would be the point? It doesn't make me feel better and they certainly don't raise my stock any. I might as well stay single.

One of the beauty standards today is the same that it was many years ago: white, long straight hair and thin.
However, I've seen many white women trying to "steal" black women's features like big butts and full lips. It's ridiculous, sad and frustrating!
Besides a lot of people believe that what they see on social media is what is beautiful and/or acceptable. As a result they end up with a eating disorder.

completely unrealistic... and i'll admit it, i do fall into the trap sometimes because one thing i've learned these past few years is that 'people only respect you if you're beautiful' but that's just my experience. Having to fit in in terms of beauty has been something extremely challenging for me but everyone experiences it at some point in their life and i feel like along with that and other obstacles, it really made me stronger... beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway so you never know what could happen

Beauty expectations/preferences will go in and out of style. But there are universal Beauty standards that are cross cultural, cross time. Those things are what I look at as Beauty.

I think the publicly advanced standards of beauty are stereotyped and do not represent what most people seek in a romantic partner. E. g., most men do not want a woman with 38DD boobs and a mammoth ass, but that is the notion advanced by Hollywood and the MSM (main stream morons.)

People are more practical than ever. Physical beauty is most sought after till a certain age. After that, inner beauty is seen. But still some people are not able to digest that they have gotten older, so they still hit on the newer stock.

Stock=both males and females. We are stocks available in matching market.

What's great is that beauty is so more inclusive today than it was 50 years ago when I was a kid. It was JUST starting to open up with African models, then African-American models and then EVERYONE starting rolling in! That's great.

Honestly wouldn't have a problem with it if it was realistic. there's a difference between a model and photoshop surgery. Otherwise beauty standards exist because most people find those features attractive, nothing can be done about that.

Most people are plastic. They have modified their looks from appearing like a fat ugly monster to looking normal or decent because of excessive makeup, threading, hair modifications or surgery.

Well who doesn't like hot bitches

It doesn't make sense to date girls. you find ugly. It's nothing to do with times changing or beauty becoming a standard... This is the way guys have always been... I guarantee you 100. years ago guys only went for tha attractive girls back then too.. it's nothing to do with society conditioning us... It's jus the male nature to prefer beautiful girls over ugly ones

    Always been that way
    Always will be

It's the same as it always has been, toxic, always changing, and damn near impossible to reach.

I think natural look woman are more beautiful than professional models and this is also true for naturally looking men and by natural, I mean typical features, not nudity.

As fake as most other things, including good and evil, right and wrong, positive and negative.
Socially speaking, these are the worst years of the modern era.

one common denominator through all my life... I never ask society about their -seemingly ever changing- opinion on things many... I lead my own life as individual, for the most part, of course...

I think it’s bs…. They use features from certain women, and then shame those same women and make them feel ugly…

    It's become worse.
Too many botox procedures gone wrong.
Lips are too big & hanging on the sides.
I watch shows from the 50s & 60s and their makeup was more natural looking.

No amount of makeup can make someone look good if the base isn’t good. You need to already have nice features.

I think that the standards are troublingly high and are a significant contributing factor as to why depression and anxiety are so high today.

Most of it is fake. The most important beauty is what's inside a person, who and what they are, what ideals they stand for.

I seriously dislike tattoos on women and ripped jeans. I think both things looks trashy. I don't understand why some people like it.

I tend to laugh at them.

As in most cases it's "makeup standards" rather than "beauty standards" you're talking about.

The same opinion it's always been since the beginning of time it's in the eye of the beholder. There is no standard of beauty it depends on who's looking at who and how they feel

A big pile of shit. You have to say that everything is beautiful, even the worst. A fake positivity that doesn't help anyone.
No, being obese isn't beautiful, and there are ugly people, i'm a prime example of it.

Too many people think plastic surgery, piercings, and tattoos are attractive.

Beauty in today's society is all about who can be the fake-est. And I'm not saying that it is only today, but it's super present today vs. in the past

Interesting question, but in my opinion beauty is timeless -- I don't think you can really put it in a context.

In today's society beauty has been perverted and turned into ugliness; real, pure, natural beauty seems to be a species more critically endangered than the white rhino or the tiger in the wild.

The same as always. For women, bilateral symmetry, small waist to hip ratio, smooth clear skin, a youthful appearence, and big eyes.
