How did people dress in the nineteen thirties, in Western countries?

Not much differently from the 1920s. Fashion started drastically shifting in the 40s and, more noticeably, in the 50s.

Women's fashion drifted away from the rectangle shaped dresses of the 20s. Dresses were created with strong shoulders, using fabric and padding, and ciched waists. It must be noted that there was a difference between what was worn during the day and what was worn at night for parties or events. Day dresses had a lot of differet patterns such as stripes and polka dots. Night dresses were more dainty with simpler colours. They got rid of the short bob haircut and started wearing longer styles with waves and curls.

Films started impacting what women wore. Stars like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford were huge inspirations for many women.

For men, casual styles during the day became more popular. Plus four baggy trousers and knitted sweaters was common. Plus four trousers were especially popular with university students. Lapels on suit jackets became wider and the separate white collars were on the way out for wear during the day. They would become completely abandoned in the 40s and 50s. As night wear, men still were wearing tuxedos with starched collars and starched white shirts with black or white buttons. They paired it with beaver top hats.

Those were their casual dresses. They had more elegant things for parties and such.

Suits

1930s clothing brings to mind bias cut evening gowns in liquid satins and silks, tweed suits, flounces and frills and topped off by a cute beret or tilt hat. 30s Fashion certainly seemed fussier than the 1920s with its relentless ornaments of bows, trims and frills.

People in the past used to be much more elegant than people today. Back then crop tops and leggings didn't exist. I think society has hit bottom
