Is Instagram Collaborations Scam?

I rarely check my Instagram messages, I just checked Instagram messages and have received a few messages from clothing, Jewelry and Beauty Salons asking to cooperate with them, they’ll send me their products and I’ll take photos with them.

Is this a scam or something?

Because I don’t have a very active Instagram, I only use it to post photos sometimes.

Many are but not all. It's important to have a good look at the profile and brand. Often you can tell right away if it's not legit... If it's a new profile or their page has little to no activity then that's suspicious. Also if it's too good to be true then it probably is. No one will give you a lot of money for some basic promotion and the less followers you have the more important that is too keep in mind. If someone promises you 5k to do some pictures even you gave just a few hundred followers then that's obviously gonna be a scam.

If it seems legit you can accept and see where it goes... If they suddenly ask to send them money first, want your pw or other personal data just block.

Of course you need to keep in mind that big companies will not be interested in you if you're small... Not worth their effort. So most brands that contact you will be small. I've done 3 collaborations and always was a basic "we send you a product and you make a post about it and then you can keep it" style of campaign. Important is to always disclose if it's an ad and if they ask you not to do that also skip

There are definitely affiliate programs for arrangements like that and legitimate business can solicit partnerships via DMs.


But, it is a little odd that they would reach out to you if you aren’t very active or don’t have an enormous following.


It’s called influencer marketing. But, it only makes sense if you’re able to promote a product in front of a very large audience.


Anyone who isn’t very active on social media or doesn’t have a huge following wouldn’t be a good fit for affiliate programs.


So, it’s quite possible that they just wanted to get a hold of your financial information. Or some other type of scam.

Though, I suppose there’s always the possibility that they expect you to START actively growing your following AFTER joining an affiliate program — but that’s not a good strategy because then it can come off salesy or money-hungry.

It’s best to grow an audience naturally with authentic original content that you create, so you have a proven system that can consistently grow an audience.

From there, you have a lot of attention, which you can then monetize via affiliate programs and sponsorships.

That’s the best route to go if you ever are thinking about becoming a full time content creator on social media.

If it sounds to good to be true then it is probably a scam. If they get uppity or make every excuse to do normal verification things then it is probably a scam. But other than that who knows.

Sometimes those are legitimate business deals, but I wouldn't expect that any company that reaches out to you over a DM would be legit.

My friend has 70000 followers and she sometimes gets legit offers in DMs.

But mine are most likely scams.

No, not really. She doesn’t have anyone, she controls it by herself.

Hmm... I guess you'd have to be the kind of person who enjoys that style of attention and interaction to build a following that large. I personally couldn't do it. I'd have to hire people.

Nm, I read @NathanDavis provided link. I do know as a general rule of thumb I only provide the necessary financial information to make a purchase. I am suspicious when they ask for very specific financial information. Like people here in the US will get calls from India claiming to represent the US government asking for financial information. The actual US government will NEVER cold call you. They only call if you request a return call. Citizens are responsible for going to government offices, official US sites, or calling the US government themselves without prompt if you want to do business with them. The US government reports to its citizens, not the other way around.

The point is, I’m wary of people who claim you have to “spend money to make money.” I generally don’t engage in marketing myself like that because it’s risky. I’m pretty charitable with what I share because I think educating and entertaining people is it’s own reward as a leisure activity. Perhaps I am a fool. And perhaps it’s also why I have so many tales to tell, because I don’t nickle and dime people for everything I have to say. It’s hard for people to lift themselves up by their boot straps.
