That is how the world is now. Everyone has to stand the line and look like slobs. Dressing up is seen as "excessive".
I got dress coded before when I wore a black dress shirt and chinos. Told me "you look like you're going to the opera". Haha. And that is my more casual look.
Now that I am a prof though I can wear whatever I want. So I wear my vintage suits and other dressy attire.

I was an administrator in a K-12 school system. I was hired to be the project manager for a technology upgrade. I often climbed up into ceilings or down in the basement. I usually wore jeans and sweatshirts. The superintendent actually wrote in my contract that I was supposed to dress "administratively.

Yes, at least once or twice.
The only one I can remember was when I was working for a bank on their IRS project. Men aren't allowed to wear shorts, for some reason but women are allowed to wear short skirts! The theory is that men can secretly hide checks up their shorts but women can't do that under a skirt because they also had to wear pantyhose under a skirt. My job was running around the floor all day moving the work from one section to the next so, I'd get very hot and sweaty up there on the 28th floor with about 100 people and no windows to be opened. I don't think we were allowed to have fans, either. But, 100% of the women were just sitting at a desk, shuffling checks and papers or using adding or coding machines! So, I asked one of my bosses if I could also wear a skirt. She said it's perfectly fine with her and there's nothing in the dress code that says I can't! And, if anybody said anything about me doing so, she'd stand up for me! So, the next day, I wore a skirt to work. At first, nobody noticed. Then, one of the sub bosses saw it and said something to her boss. He came to me and said that I'd have to wear pants. So, I changed. THEN the shit hit the fan!! Most of the women started getting pissed that I was made to change into pants, said that I should sue for discrimination and that I should change back into the skirt! The next time we got trainees in and they were reading off the dress code, it said that men weren't allowed to wear skirts!! LOL! I made them change the dress code!!Yup. I've worn tights with a skirt before and was in a hurry so when I put them on and they ended up not being much darker than my actual skin, I had no time to find another pair. There were men in the office with literal shorts on. Yet I get told off for wearing a skirt and tights. I was young at the time. Now adays I'd point out the hypocrisy.
I've also had issues where I wear a top and feel im getting shade because I'm top heavy, so it shows more boob than it would on a small girl. It's actually not showing more than maybe 10-15% of my boobs but apparently that's still not ok. Even though women with smaller chests may be showing off 30% or so of theirs. I don't think I've ever been pulled up for that but defo had the looks.
Now adays I avoid jobs that have sexist bs rules.
I spent most of my post military career in sales and worked in management as well. In the beginning I was told to shave because they believed I was more approachable. Some places were only tie some were polo shirts. Owners are constantly fed data and research that can dictate a dress code. If you are in sales the only way to get around this is putting up big numbers. Then everyone naturally should dress like you. And if you feel like flexing your power tell the boss about how you high value client that you just made your month on almost left because tie die person caused them concern about how serious and professional the place was.
kind of, yes...
"not enough layers for these winter days"I dress code geezers quite a bit.
But that aside, in your case you need to learn that you're at work, not your moms house. You prep to work, and dress is part of that. You'll never get much of a career if you don't learn that fact. You are employed as per expectations that you know how to dress.
Yes. I worked backroom at a major retail chain. I won't say its name just that it begins with "M" and ends in "all-marte".
They told us we had to start wearing shirts with collars to look more professional. I simply didn't to it cause I literally didn't care. They kept hounding me about it but I quit a few months later anyway. One night I wore a Grateful Dead shirt to work at the bar. There is no dress code for the employees. The owner came out of the back and said "dude you can't wear that shirt in here, this is a punk rock bar. Go in the back and turn it inside out or put on a different shirt." I asked him "are you serious?" He said "totally". I laughed all the way into the bathroom.
My kid got dress-coded in school while a trans kid wore something more revealing. It’s all subjective.
Weird. I only know of one girl that had been dress-coded and that was because of jealous coworkers, not because of the management. Her skirts were too short or something.
Every day! I don't wear not much of anything. Oh wait, that's right, I work from home.
Nope, only at school. But only had vacation jobs so far
Yes, when I worked in court we had strict dress codes.
Oh, how I loved breaking those dress codes!
Our dress code is “business attire” so it is pretty vague.
So you exchanged a nice blouse, for some free tacky shirt. Interesting
Did he maybe not want you too mess up your shirt? Seems weird to me.
