in legally blonde the musical, there's a song called "is he gay or European" and it raises valid questions (and funny ones too)

When I was in high school I would wear baggy clothes because I was listening to hip hop and I just wanted to be physicallycomfortable and for people to leave me alone pretty much. But now I wear a variety of clothes. I have like light blue, lime colored a bunch of different colors and also different kinds of clothes more casual or more dressed up. I don't wear a full suit but I have some suit pants and some shirts and I can combine things differently. Fashion is not my main priority but over time I'll slowly put in more effort and we'll see how it goes I feel good atm anyway.
For instance in Kpop in the beginning I only listened to girl groups because the boy groups seemed really gay to me because that's just a cultural difference and the environment I had in high school. But since I got pulled into the Kpop world I was always around it and I liked maybe 2 boy group songs and then over time I listened to some more and then at some point I only cared about the song and didn't care about any of that anymore and just decided if I liked the song or not.
The point is if you can only dress and behave in very specific ways, are you masculine or are you just insecure what other people will say about you if you don't fit in? Now I don't have any inhibitions about masculinity or femininity. It doesn't mean I want to cross dress or anything, but I just express myself naturally without thinking about "am I masculine enough?" or anything like that.
This is one example. When I first saw this I was like WTF IS THIS? Now it's just funny
https://www.youtube.com/embed/skZxb5sBoiUThis one is newer and it's supposed to be sexy for women but the way they are shown is still more focused on aesthetic and sensuality than it would be in the west.

@beefcakebradybatson not at all I’m sure many boy bands in 90s had relations with guys and there is also a stereo type of having teen boy bands too which clearly show underdeveloped/feminine guys.

11 moNot really, at least where I live.
I generally always wear either a suit or my plain uniform.

Uniform used to be black but I switched to gray because too many people said I looked like a priest or a blackshirt.
Simple suit, tie, and depending on the occasion medals/accolades for other occasions.

european dudes tend to dress much better than American men and put more effort in their appearance. there's maybe slightly less rules about what's gay and what's masculine for fashion maybe too. but i dont think european men are 'androgynous'. they're not feminine.

It all began with the speedo. Men in Europe are more likely to wear Speedos or other tight-fitting swim briefs on vacation. This is due in part to cultural conventions, fashion trends, and hygienic considerations; thus, when Americans see this, they refer to European men as feminine. American men are more inclined to wear board shorts that are loose-fitting. Another difference is that European men are more inclined to get their clothes altered to fit properly; American men are less likely to do so.

European men are less likely to be fugly schlubs than American men

@beefcakebradybatson Given that many American men have European ancestry, I'm having trouble understanding what you're saying.
- 10 mo
Many American men have European ancestry, but unlike their Continental boy cousins, Yankee lads tend towards an Everyman schlubbiness in both appearance and fashion sense.

@beefcakebradybatson Fortunately, my American DH doesn't.

m 11 moTo assume there would be a general European fashion is a first major mistake. Italian fashion is different from Scandinavian and Spanish fashion is different from Polish.

What about Germany?

Depends on the region. People in Berlin/East tend to dress cheaply, people in Bavaria like traditional clothing. But none are exactly known for being "androgynous".

What about yourself?

Western Europeans all have a similar style. And the majority of big name fashion designers come from the same general regions.

I buy business casual and business attire plus the occasional jeans. The only place where I have even seen male androgynous fashion was at some of these fruity fashion shows. But that material certainly never shows up in the clothing stores I have frequented so far.

@TwoToTooTutu2 Germany is not Western Europe; it's Central Europe.

@TwoToTooTutu2 They in fact, do not

I didn't mention Germans?
Honestly when I look at how shitty Americans dress with our crappy nylon drip we're the last people who should be criticizing someone else's dress style. We used to actually have that drip back in the 50s Have you seen how those suites back then were cut? And don't even get me started on those flapper dresses. Americans dress like shit now.

@DryGermanGuy No but I doo watch old black and white Noir movies.
m 10 moCompared to India, I wouldn't know, no intel about this. Plus, as said in the comments, it seems perilous to talk about European fashion as something unified. Because...

Also, if you wanted to combine fashion of all these countries, you would also have to account for fashion based on social class, based on urban vs rural, young vs old etc. etc.
00 ReplyThere is a reason for this, women hold feminine power ( which runs counter to the victimhood mentality of feminism). The Spanish men knew this and in the 1500’s or further back started incorporating flamboyant fashion for this reason. European fashion and architecture has many influences sometimes running counter to each other purpose like the Catholic Baroque & Rococo period vs the Protestant minimalist architecture.
