Why did Farrah Fawcett feathered hairstyles disappear as a trend?

I'm an 80s baby so of course a lot of my mom's hot besties who I developed childhood crushes on always had this hairstyle.

I guest I've kept my hopes up too high during those days when I always hoped that I would date a woman like that when I grow up but unfortunately they started dying out as a trend in the late 90s.

but I always wondered why such a hairstyle that made women so fucking hot and gorgeous could disappear like this. were they hard to achieve? did they require too much hair product? too time consuming?

Well, I'm no expert, bu any means, so I can only offer two possible explanations.

The first being that styles just naturally fade over time, and what is popular on day will eventually go out of style. This is particularly evident as new generations grow to adulthood, and try to distinguish themselves from their "lame" parents by adopting new trends, which then become to new popular style.

Secondly, remember all the panic & doom about the hole in the ozone layer, from when we were younger? The ban on CFCs, so that we wouldn't all turn into cancerous mutants?

Well, CFCs were a key component of hairsprays at the time, and some of those styles required a ton of it to maintain. I remember women fumigating everyone in a 5-mile radius with that shit. No more CFCs, no more gravity-defying hair, at least until those sprays were replaced with other chemicals.

because rollers were still a thing back then and you could achieve this look in the half of time of curls. and curls were out. so after half curls/feathers there was nowhere to go for rollers. i think that's when the curling iron and later flat iron were made.
