Why are we awkward around each other and acting hot and cold?

I'm a shy person and super shy around my crush. My crush seems to know I like him and lately, he's acting hot and cold. One day, he makes an effort to start a conversation with me and next day we both get silent although we're alone in the same room. I think he's kind of shy and a little self-conscious around me (although he's a confident guy generally). And, we both are 25+.

Can you all help me figure out what's going on?

What does his hot and cold behaviours said?

Is there any chance that he likes me back or is he just uncomfortable because he knows I like him?

I think he does like you and is just too shy to fully express himself.
