Check to see if he uses a lot of abbreviations (idk, lol, ig, wtf, etc.), I used to be shy around girls when I was texting them and when I opened up more, I noticed that I didn't use abbreviations as much.
I partially agree in the side of shy guys being clingy, but his true self won't come out until he's comfortable with you. I take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to show my true colors.
