How to subtly show interest in a guy via text?

I really like this guy and he's admitted to having a huge crush on me in the past but I don't know if he'd still feel that way. I want to make it clear that I'm interested without just outright saying it and coming on too strong. How should I go about doing it? What should I look for in regards to whether or not he's interested. We're only texting right now since we haven't got a chance to see each other in person for a while.

Show initiative, without giving in completely. For example, message him and say hey you have been thinking about him, but change the subject to what he's doing etc.

Act consistently as someone who is interested, like don't wait for days to respond to him, and don't always wait for him to text first.

Talk about him. Compliment something about him 😉 But don't take it too far, be cool about it.

Dick pic guy he's my favorite guy and closest male friend. I'm thinking of seeing if we can meet up in person since there's a festival next week in our town and we both love going to it every year

Well, actually, since he's already admitted to crushing on you, a direct approach would be best. Subtle hinting might leave him confused and upset. Call him up? Better than texting. And maybe video call him?
