Why does my crush treat me differently in person and texts?

So, this has been bugging me for a year and I couldn't find anyone online with a similar experience.

I started texting this guy due to a coincidence a year ago and he was really a witty, awesome dude. We happened to share so many similarities that he suggested that we form a "sibling" relationship. I agreed heartily. Gradually, I began to like him more than a friend. Now the funny part comes. We never ever talk to or acknowledge each other in person. I just ignore him and he ignores me too. This is puzzling me. There was a rumor that I liked him but then I was so embarrassed that I fabricated a story about crushing on another guy. Nowadays, we still text about all sorts of things like family, school, but sometimes he doesn't reply me. It's hurting me because I really like him and I want to know what he's probably thinking.
