How direct do the people you are interested in romantically have to be for you to get the hint?

I was thinking about communication and how explicitly I need to be told something, and how this has probably affected my ability to get into relationships in the past. I've been told a number of times... so and so was interested in you at one point... and I dont think I would know unless they flat out said I am romantically interested in you.
