Oh definitely :- and it's a bit of a problem.

I used to think girls didn't like me. But then discovered a few girls in school had a crush on me but thought I was disinterested. A couple in college thought I was gay, actually.

My thing is that I don't show it until I know more about her and what kind of attention she gets. Like the more attention she gets, and the more she "just knows it", the more standoffish I get.

I mostly like giving attention to girls who seem like they would get more out of it.

If she is already getting male attention in front of me, I generally don't butt in much. It usually descends into some immature dick measuring contest. Folks, especially guys, might say that "Isn't Alpha" but I have better things to do than "compete" for a girl over what amounts to a simple dominance contest with other men, often to her annoyance.

Or if I do want to butt in, I try to find something she is interested in and try to have a no-pressure friendly chat and see if a genuine connection builds. Though in one such case, it was one of the girls who thought I was gay. I wasn't hitting on her like the other guys.

I just grew up with a sister who got a lot of unsavory attention, and kinda grew up thinking my sexuality was some evil thing that needs to be hidden. So for things to go to the next level, she often has to push it there. Not with much, but I still need to see her initiate something before I feel safe moving forward.
