Is dating a cop a bad idea?

I am interested in this guy who happens to be a cop. I think he's totally sweet and shy (although honestly I've only just met him). My brother and cousin (both guys) told me I shouldn't date a cop because they're a**h***s as a rule. Of course I shouldn't generalize all cops but I was just wondering what you all think.

I've been in a 5 month relationship with a cop. He is the most amazing man I've ever met in my life. However, here are the things you need to know and evaluate before you get into a relationship with him.

1) He is probably going to be super protective. It's a good thing, yes, he cares about you. Sometimes protective to a fault. Remember he has seen the worst of people and certain situations. Learn the difference between protective and controlling. Controlling is bad! Warning sign: "I am the law" behavior.

2) He is probably gonna be a little paranoid. Remember, he's seen stuff you haven't. So, don't get mad when he acts a certain way in public.

3) His schedule will be crazy. Most cops work on a shift schedule that changes every few months so, you have to be flexible and understanding with your time as well.

4) He is probably going to take his job extremely seriously, so be respectful of this. Don't request to do stuff that could get him in trouble.

5) He will probably be worthy of your trust. They have a reputation to withhold so he will probably have good character.

I hope this helps! My man is an amazing lover when he is with me and protective and respectful of me. Not all cops are a**holes. You will find douche cops just as easily as you will find normal douche guys. Just remember, he is a cop 24/7...most don't know how to step out of that role. Be understanding and flexible and you are in for a nice surprise :)

My boyfriend does the same thing...he has his phone number blocked so I just know when I seen unknown caller that it is him...he gave me his number right away so I could call him back and stuff...maybe just mention to him that you need his number because you are unable to get ahold of him unless he calls you first...

Go on a date with him. If he's an a**hole, don't date him again. If he's a good guy, it's all good. Being a cop is only a part of this guy, it's not fair to dismiss him just because he might be a jerk based on his occupation.

I would date a cop I mean I don't see why not. My grandfather was a cop and my cousin is a cop and they're both really sweet men so I don't think cops are a**holes but apparently I'm bias lol

lol well I don't know many cops but I wouldn't think that they'd be jerks as a rule. I think some people give them the rep as abusive, power-hungry, roid-ragers but that definitly cannot be all of them! As a matter of fact, I've met very few cops that were jerks. Maybe its just an urban legend lol

It depends on the cop. Yea some are bad to date but not all.

But I will tell you that

There are both a lot of women and men who just want to date cops for one reason or another. They find the profession attractive, they want to brag they are dating a cop, just because they want to see if they can do it, the list goes on and on.

But long term when things get more serious they don’t know what they are in for.

Are you nurturing? Are you supportive? See cops have to be strong 90 percent of the time. They have a lot of built up anger and depression from fucked up situations they have to see everyday.

A lot of people don’t think about that before going into a relationship with a cop. Missing holidays and that means if you get married missing birthdays, holidays, major milestones, etc. Not being home on weekends.

Are you ready to accept that? If you are then give it a shot and see if it works.

Another thing will be worrying about someone you love if they are coming home or not.

Not to mention. I’m sorry they are going to flake on dates because he’s been called into work.

I’m sorry your husband if you get married is going to be fired up with a drunk idiot who ran from the cops led them on a hours long pursuit and hit and killed a family or whatever.

You have to be ready for dates to be canceled last minute and understand it’s not his fault.
