We've known each other for years but recently started to flirt with each other. Its been going well and we are together as if we were in a relationship but when asked about how he feels about us, he says really likes me but he doesn't love himself enough to love someone romantically... so I'm unsure how to go forward.

You need to walk away love. It's a situationship. Sex will be great but he can't and won't provide you ANY emotional support. Don't do it. Just think about it... you have sex with him
