Although I prefer today's modern men (strong but have a sensitivity that they eventually become comfortable to express to me), I kind of have/had to be conked over the head, otherwise I never knew anyone liked me. I default to not thinking that. And what I found out over the years (mostly through my twenties, but it kind of continues today) is that there were men who did have feelings for me, yet I never know. Not that I'm asking for a brute, caveman, lol. Something not too subtle, and not too Neanderthal would be nice/ideal.

Effective flirting? I don't know. How about take time to get to know the girl/woman. It can be friendly chat for a while, talking about interests, check sensibilities, etc. Friends first. Females are much more pro-friends first than men are. Males tend to think it's a waste of time. I've done the polls on here. Notice the 55% pink vs. 39% blue.

Of your past romantic relationships, did they start out as friends?

I pretty much have needed guys to just plainly say, "I like you", "I have feelings for you", or "Would you like to go out on a date?"

Years ago, I was standing in my kitchen with a girl friend and my husband, and I don't know what we were all talking about, drinking, and I said, "Well, I don't know how to flirt" and they both scoffed and laughed at me! "What? No, I don't!" That was weird. So, apparently I am "flirting" without knowing it. Maybe that has something to do with me not thinking anyone is flirting with me. So I can't offer any advice on this, lol.

And one time, my mother told me that someone from her past (my dad's brother) was "charming", and at another time that "charming" was "trouble", so I put those two things together, when speaking to someone who was closer to her age than mine (we all got on the phone together, briefly) and I found out then that "charming" is actually "quite irresistible." So maybe shoot for that? lol

Hmmm. Yes. Instead of bypassing the q, because I didn't have a decisive answer or piece of advice, I got pulled in by yet another interesting q of yours; and thus, I did not have any particular advice or information to impart.
My apologies.
It is how my mind operates sometimes - meandering, associations, etc. Perhaps next time I should just keep on walking when I don't know what to say...

TL;dr: I don't know how to flirt. And I don't know how other people do it. I find sincerity, and vulnerability, and honesty very, very appealing and attractive.
Oh, and don't forget specificity. To me I find that almost/sometimes irresistible.
(This runs counter to what many young males will tell you, "Chicks don't respect vulnerability" etc etc [insert some other less articulate verbiage here]. Oh, and "If you want to know how to fish, don't ask the fish..." Shutupayouuuu.
